Student’s democratic traditions are a crucial part of the history of KPI. Starting from 1899, the organizational committee was created to control general democratic student’s movements with the aim of democratization of higher education, institutional autonomy, freedom of student organizations, coordinating protests against the reactionary policies of the then government.
Pre-revolutionary events in Russian Empire had a significant impact on the KPI students. Students intensified their actions for the democratization of KPI management, extensive involvement of students in research work, improving the conditions of all aspects of their lives.
Loyalty of KPI students to democratic traditions can be traced throughout the age of KPI. Today the democratic system of student’s self-government includes students’ council of the university, students’ councils of all faculties and institutions and also a faction of students’ academic council in "KPI" (10% of the members of the scientific council), which is offered by students’ council of university, academic student association, the primary trade union organization of students.
These students’ governments of KPI complement each other, take part in the university management in order to get students to solve important educational, scientific and social activities, to plan leisure, sport and spiritual development. The issues of the studets’ newspaper "I am a student of KPI" show the development of all aspects of student’s life. By the way, the students work on the newspaper publishing.
Assessing the activities of student government, Salzburg Seminar experts in thier report on the work at "KPI" 17-22 September 2001 stated: "KPI can be proud of its student council. The consultants met with several groups of students that knew the subject of the talk extremely well and were well informed in matters of university life."
