In the development of international activities in the reporting 2013 University laid new traditions and mechanisms to solve the problems important for the KPI, and for the whole of Ukraine. Among them are: the implementation of institutional changes on the basis of the accumulation of international experience, strengthen the international design, educational and research activities, the use of mechanisms for the development of international cooperation through joint international structures, expansion of the dual degree program, participation in regional and global programs, the international transfer of technology, and others.

Iindicators of international activity were entered in both departments as well as  individual ratings of academic staff.

Total activity in international space

Development of international cooperation took place against the backdrop of the growing of the total activity in this area.

In 2013 compared with 1999, the number of international events has increased by 8 times. Our university is represented Ukraine in 38 countries, and KPI was visited by delegations from 43 countries. Among the visiting "KPI", were Montenegro Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic; international experts committee of the UN Security Council; Deputy General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Le Hong Anh; Chairman of the Canadian Bureau for International Education Karen McBride; Deputy Minister of Defence of Kazakhstan SM Gromov; Deputy Secretary General of the China State Fund of Scholars Cao Sheehy; Executive Director of JST (Japan Agency for Science and Technology) Misha Obara; former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, president of the University of Winnipeg L. Axworthy; first secretary of the city Heychzhou committee of the Communist Party of China Mr. Chen and others.

We have worked closely with the ambassadors of the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Japan, China and others. 118 talks, meetings, events were carried out at the university level with these countries.

Among the most important results of the DIC are worth noting.

Relations with Poland. Vivid demonstration of friendship between Ukraine and Poland was the opening of the monument to the outstanding pupil of KPI, the world-renowned physical chemist Professor Wojciech Sventoslavsky and roundtable of state, political and public figures of Ukraine and Poland "Wojciech Sventoslavsky - the person who brings together the peoples of Ukraine and Poland."

Japanese direction. Ukrainian-Japanese Center is a driving force here during the last 10 years. During the year the Centre  held 114 events, including traditional fair "Study in JAPAN Fair", an international seminar on "Lessons from Chernobyl to Fukushima"; "Fires of sorrow" to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Japan gave KPI equipment for energy audits in the amount of $ 1,000. Our university has been visited by Nobel laureate Dr. Noyori; President of STS-Forum (Science and Technology for Society) - the world's annual meeting of the organizers of science and prominent scientists in the world, the so-called "Scientific Davos" - Mr. Omagh; Vice-President of the University of Tokyo Professor. Matsumoto; Director of powerful synchronous center of the world - the Japanese SPring-8, the current world leader transition to Pikotechnology - prof. Ishikawa. In addition, KPI was visited by 342 Japanese citizen, and just UJC events were attended by more than 13,000 people. About 600 people from Kiev studied Japanese language  and arts here.

In 2013, thanks to the support of the Ambassador of Japan T. Sakata, new cooperation agreements with 7 universities in Japan were signed (within the last 12 years we have had only an agreement with the Japanese Tohoku University). 3 more agreements are prepared. 3 new agreements about student mobility also were signed.

Chinese direction. New initiatives KPI to develop cooperation with China are supported at the level of representatives of the Government of China. This, above all, "Program 4 principles" (the creation of joint scientific innovation and educational centers in China CPI, increased training for China, contacts in the human dimension). There are the Science Park KPI in Liaoning and Ukrainian-Chinese Center KPI in the structure of Shenyang Aerospace University, whose activities are developing successfully.

An agreement is signed to establish a joint Ukrainian-Chinese university with the People's Government of Guangdong Province town Heychzhou. This project can bring the entire system of international activities of the university to a new level and make a profit.

With the support of the Ambassador of China to Ukraine Zhang Siyun  negotiations are on the opening of the Confucius Institute in the KPI and the teaching of the Chinese language to target the training of engineers for the joint Ukrainian-Chinese enterprises. This will strengthen the position of the KPI in the development of economic, scientific and innovative cooperation with China in the strategic perspective.

The university and its departments actively develop contacts with other countries.

One of the main results of the joint work of DIC with the DEW and other units was the increase in the number of international educational projects and grants.

This problem is solved by the faculties, institutes, who felt the need for projects TEMPUS (most of  29 applications filed by the University in 2013 were from professional units, with 6 of them won). Today the University is a participant in 10 projects under the program TEMPUS, which is the best result among the universities of Ukraine, and three projects under the program EURASIA.

Thanks to the educational projects the network of joint international structures is widely expanding. There are 5 more joint centers with partners from the United States, China, Poland, Norway, Slovakia (their total number is close to 50):

  • on  FEPEA - Centre of Renewable Energy in conjunction with the Embassy of Poland;
  • on FCT class of distance education by project EURASIA "Sustainable Production";
  • on FCT training center with an American company IT "Honeywell Ukraine";
  • Classroom complex of e-learning program "Dual Degree" with the Central European University, Skalica, Slovakia.

Jointly with the department of educational work for approaching the departments to international expertise and accreditation specialties contacts were initiated with the European agencies to guarantee the quality of higher education: the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education ENQA, with the Network of Quality Assurance Agencies of Higher Education in Central and Eastern Europe CEENQA, with the International Engineering pedagogy IGIP.

International expertise of our specialties and further accreditation - a complex and fairly expensive process, the experience of which the universities of Ukraine still lacks. But to start the process for the CPI is very important.

A lot of student international events was held together with DEW.

Increased numbers of international academic mobility.  455 thousand € was spent at 4 projects of the European Union ERASMUS MUNDUS where our university is a participant,on the education and training of students, faculty members. Another 1.2 million USD - for the mobility program of the Government of Ukraine "100 + 100 + 100". Fulbright (USA) - 150 thousand $. For the first time in American mobility program at the same time three students of KPI have won Fulbright grants (from 21 grants for Ukraine). 67 students CPI went in 2013 for training abroad on 11 programs such as "Dual Degree" with universities in Germany, France, Korea, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Slovakia . The total number of trips on the four projects ERASMUS in 2013 amounted to 60. In 2013 162 of our students went abroad. Important in our efforts to DEW was the victory in 2013 of another project in the competition ERASMUS MUNDUS.

Thus, in 2014 the number of active European mobility projects reached 5 Because of this some 200 representatives of Ukraine will be able to learn and train in the universities of 6 European countries.

In 2013 together with the Department of Science and Innovation, National Contact Points of the new EU program "Horizon 2020" in the IT field and in the field of environmental conservation were created. Four project are now in 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of EU.

Strengthened support of international technology transfer projects: in 2013, the university won 2 projects in this area (under the STCU and 7 th RP of the European Union).

A new project funded by the STCU NoGAP and aims to spread the system of training in innovation management for CIS countries, including Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Technology transfer is the basis of the project "Sustainable Campus" with the University of Winnipeg. His goal - the transfer of Canadian technology and expertise in the area of the KPI. Now, with the financial support of the Canadian CIDA project formed on warming the building №7. Moreover, in the framework of the project "Sustainable Campus" KPI received passwords free access to the libraries of the United States and Canada, which are transmitted in the HNI and KPI library.

On the part of  DIC is also providing support for projects initiated by the Department of Advanced Development and Scientific Park "Kyiv Polytechnic". Thus, KPI first came out with proposals to cyber security technologies and clean water to the level of the UN agencies.

So, 2013 was a year of significant strengthening project approach in all areas of teaching, research, student work and future development.

To the level of advanced universities in the world: the contribution of faculties

Two new faculties - FBE and FASS break into the top five leaders of the integral rating of international activities in 2013.

Якщо поглянути на інтегральний рейтинг факультетів за останні 3 роки, то видно, що найбільш стабільні показники з міжнародної діяльності демонструє ХТФ, який посилює свої позиції з року в рік.

If you look at the integral rating departments over the past 3 years, it can be seen that the most stable performance in international activities demonstrates the FCT, which strengthens its position from year to year.

According to the index of academic mobility FBE is  ahead. Students, graduates, teachers of the faculty in 2013 went on an internship, international conferences, scientific work and sports events in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Korea, Portugal, Norway, Lithuania, Vietnam, Georgia, Romania, Slovakia and even Colombia. In the latter case, they represented Ukraine and the KPI at the world championships in sports aerobics. Just took 87 trips in 16 countries.

For international publications index that takes into account the number of books and scientific articles published abroad, leaders are IPT and FIDE. By this measure they exceed the average for the university twice.

According to the index of activity of international cooperation, taking into account international agreements, activities, joint structures, FW is a leader to the second year in a row. Faculty during the year held 33 international events. Training Center in the direction of "International Welding Engineer" for many years exists on the faculty. Faculty involved in two double-degree programs: the Federal University of  Umberlandiya (Brazil) and in the framework of the Joint Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from the Magdeburg University named after Otto-von-Guericke. Faculty members are members of various international professional associations.

According to the index of activity in the international market of educational services, taking into account the number of foreigners who are studying in the KPI, the leaders are FMM and FASS. If in 2012 FAX was the sole leader in this indicator, then in 2013 he was joined by  FMM. About 8-9% of the students in these departments - foreign nationals. These indicators are already close to the level of the leading universities in the world.

Taking into account the means of international activities, FASS and FW came forward. These departments have been leaders in this index in the previous, 2012. FASS, as already mentioned, is one of the leaders on the preparation of foreign students, and, of course, has significant revenues from these activities to its budget. FW also provides training of foreign specialists, including through a program of the International Institute of Welding. The staff and students of the Faculty actively promote international cooperation with partners from China, Belarus, the Russian Federation.

Best experience faculties

Due to what faculties took the first five places? What they have outstanding achievements?

FPE  has three indexes, which is above the average for the KPI. Two departments of the faculty were in the top ten. Students and teachers of the faculty made in 2013 51 travel abroad for the purpose of training, participation in conferences, scientific work. All of these trips took place through international projects and individual grants, which were won by students, graduate students and faculty.

FCT is one of the leaders of the project activity. Faculty performs two projects under the program EURASIA, one project under the program STCU, contracts to provide scientific and technical services firms "DetectaServices" and "Collini GmbH", bilateral projects with the German research organizations.

FBE cooperates with 12 partner universities of the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russian Federation, Italy, Norway and Slovakia. Faculty is involved in the project "Mathematics with the EU and Ukraine to the life sciences," funded by the European Commission 7th RP program, successfully completed bilateral project to Klaipeda University (Lithuania). "Dual graduate school" is introduced at FBE. Three graduate students are enrolled in graduate school in parallel at the Czech Technical University.

As for FW, its achievements were  already partially discussed. Faculty with three indices is significantly ahead of the average for the KPI.

FASS can be attributed to one of the leaders of the project activity. In 2013, the faculty has won two projects in well known European programs: TEMPUS and ERASMUS MUNDUS.

Compared to 2012, the gap between the first and last fives reduced.

Overall, in 2013 the integral parameters characterizing academic mobility, international publications and international cooperation departments increased.

Speaking about the results of the action plan on implementation of the International Development Strategy "KPI" for the period 2012-2020 years, the monitoring shows a positive trend of all 15 targets, indicators  of strategy performance.

2014 for each faculty, institute must be fixed quantitative parameters, which together with the date projections are included in the Action Plan.

the work, executed in 2013, had a positive impact and our economic performance.

The increased costs of foreign economic activity of all components are($ 3.68 million), income from training foreign citizens is $ 1.22 million, from educational and research projects, grants, international technical assistance - $ 2.46 million.

In 2013, teaching and laboratory equipment, including to provide distance learning programs such as "double diploma", as well as software, educational and scientific literature in the amount of $ 400,000 purchased and taken to the balance at the expense of international projects.

All of the above determines the positive assessment of our international activities both in Ukraine and in the world.

One should not forget that the "KPI" confirmed its top position for the third year in a row going into the QS Ranking 4% of the best universities in the world, and reaffirming its leading position in the domestic ratings of "Compass" and "Top 200". At the same time on the international component "Top 200" University consistently ranks first in all years of the rankings. In 2013, "KPI" was invited to participate in a new international university rankings: Multirunk (rating, which developed in the EU) and CIS university ranking.

It all works on the international image of the university contributes to its recognition in the global scientific and educational space.

What needs to be done. Problems and tasks for 2014

There are a lot of reserves to ensure the development of international activities. Participance in the international activities is not yet become a norm for each department and each teacher. There is no enough staff, who can work professionally "with the outside world", who knows the specifics of English for communication in international relations, in particular in the preparation of international projects in legal matters. It is necessary to improve legal support of  international activities, to learn algorithms international technology transfer, recruitment and monitoring of international technical assistance.

It is necessary to increase its activity in the international information space: through sites and sub sites of joint international structures.

But the main problem, which limits our  tremendous opportunities is that many departments still do not see in the international activities of the mechanism that could open the way to the solution of urgent problems to ensure their livelihoods. This psychological barrier is overcome gradually, but not as fast as we would like.

But finally it can be argued that performing strategy for developing international activities, accumulating experience of leading universities in the world and carrying on this basis  reforms in all spheres of activity KPI, we are approaching the European and world values, and in quantitative terms - to the level of the leading research universities in the world type.
