From the first days of the war, many teachers and staff, alumni and students of the institute voluntarily and through mobilization joined the Red Army. M.F. Shpilko (Director of the Institute in 1937-1941) and A.S. Melnikov (Deputy Director in 1933-1941) who shortly before the outbreak of war led the Polytechnic Institute in Lvov participated in the fighting.

Military Engineer 3rd rank M.F. Shpilko died in the defense of Kiev in September 1941, Major A.S. Melnikov died during the liberation of the Right-Bank Ukraine in 1944. The graduate student S.F. Nezhentsev and the student V.A. Dukhanov gave their lives for the motherland. Among the defenders of the capital of Ukraine there were T.V. Shamrylo (a graduate of the Institute of the 30s) and the employee of the Institute F.P. Shaposhnik (both died in 1941). In the defense of Kiev there were killed the teacher M.M. Seleznev, student volunteers E.G. Garanina and Y.F. Zhuravsky. 39 defenders of Kiev after the war for a long time worked at the institute. [9]

Pupils of the Institute participated in the underground and partisan struggle. There were among them V.I. Khokhlov, martyred in 1943 in the dungeons of the Gestapo, F.F. Reznichenko, shot in 1942, the graduate student welding departmetn A.D. Osipenko (died 1943). The student G.P. Gvozdev was actively involved in Kiev underground activities. Drafted into the army before the war, in September 1941, his unit was surrounded, and during the occupation he carried out underground work at the railway station Kyiv-1. Assoc. Y.I. Bovsunovsky was also surrounded with his unit in July 1941, and in 1942-1943 he continued to fight in the guerrilla S.A. Kovpak[1, p. 4; 10, p. 41].

By the end of the Great Patriotic War, teachers, employees and students of the Institute fought on all fronts. Student P. Ovsyannikov was killed in the battle near Kharkov in October 1941. Y.S. Smolkin, the participant in the battle for Moscow died in 1942 from wounds. S.B. Beniev and I. I. Rogovy were killed in the Battle of Stalingrad. and G.A. Sobol – on the Kursk Bulge. Member of the Battle of Kursk Assoc. P.F. Bruyakin died of his wounds in August 1943. The graduate of 1938 G.I. Berestorud went to the front in the summer of 1941, participated in the liberation battles from the Dnieper to the Volga, from Stalingrad to Perekop. In the battle for the liberation of Crimea HSU G.I. Berestorud was killed. His monument was erected in Melitopol.

Assoc. V.A. Guy, the graduate student K. Chuntulov students S.I. Altyntsev, I.I. Ivanisenko, J.S. Knish, Y.M. Korzh, V.G. Naryzny, V.V. Samoilenko, M. M. Shlumukov were killed when crossing the Dnieper and in other battles for the liberation of Ukraine. In the battles for the liberation of Belarus, Moldova, Baltic there were killed the students V.V. Savelenko, V.G. Skvortsov, K.K. Trigubenko, S.D. Yatsenko. In Poland there were killed the student O.S. Lozanov, a graduate student E.D. Serdyukov. Storming Berlin there were killed I.G. Butuzov, Yu.O.Babenko, P.P. Ornatsky became professors and I.K. Kozinenko - Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology. M.I. Golubnichy returned to the institute in 1970 and worked as an assistant professor.

The students who had gone to fight from the institute and returned to him to complete the training had various front destinies and postwar paths . The undergraduates V.M. Vinoslavsky and V.I. Rows of student veterans were greatly expanded by post-war demobilization from the Soviet Army. Among the enrolled full-time education in the 1945-1947 there were veterans A.V. Belotsky, D.Y. Glukhov, A.F. Domrachev, L.G. Lubenets, K.G. Samofalov, I. K. Trush, V.V. Khilchevsky. The fighting way I.K. After demobilization the veterans G.G. Vrzhosek, E.P. Krasovskii, N.N. Mukhin, M.K. Filippok, M.S. Samotryasov, V.J. Shlyuko, war veterans V.D. Zhogot, J.G. Radchenko were enrolled in the Institute. Many soldiers studied in the institute in the postwar years in evening and correspondence departments, including Heroes of the Soviet Union S.G. Bogaychuk, awarded the highest award for participation in the Battle of Kursk, M.I. Biloyvanenko - for the crossing of the Dnieper. Completed in the KPI engineering education G. I.Golikov, who in March 1944 was the commander of an infantry battalion and participated in Uman operation, received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
