Celebrations on the occasion of the opening of a memorial plaque to perpetuate the memory of Valentyn Chermalykh, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Academician of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Professor of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, long-time Head of the Department of Mining Industry Automation of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, took place on November 7 at the Educational and Research Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management (ER IEE).
The rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Mykhailo Zgurovsky, addressed the audience with a welcoming speech. He said that Valentyn Chermalykh had created an authoritative scientific school of specialists in the implementation of technologies for the use of automated electric drives with semiconductor converters. After graduating from Donetsk Polytechnic Institute, he worked as the head of the Department of Automated Electromechanical Systems in Industry and Transport at Kryvyi Rih Mining Institute. Under his leadership, several educational and research laboratories were created and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Candidate and later Doctor of Technical Sciences V.M. Chermalikh was elected Head of the Department of Automation of Mining Industry (now Automation of Electrotechnical and Mechatronic Complexes (AEMC) of KPI in 1973. Valentyn Chermalykh had more than 250 printed scientific works, including four books. His research work resulted in forty inventions. He also trained three doctors and 35 candidates of technical sciences, including foreign scientists.
The current head of the AEMC department, Serhii Boichenko, also said that V.M. Chermalykh was one of those scientists with extensive industrial experience who made a significant contribution to technical science and pedagogy.
According to V. Chermalikh's daughter, Tetiana Valentynivna, who, together with her brother Oleksandr, was a student of her father's native faculty, Valentyn Mykhailovych involved his children in learning about nature, science, and society from childhood.
"He was my teacher in graduate school. He is a man with a capital letter, because he paved the way for many future doctors and candidates of science, more than 30 of them," said Professor Viktor Rozin, who headed the department after Valentyn Mykhailovych.
"Valentyn Chermalykh founded a unique scientific school of automated technological processes using microprocessor devices, mechatronic technologies and cybernetics," says Serhii Boichenko, Head of the Department of AEMC of the IEE.
