The beginning of the 30s of last century was the period of industrialization in the Soviet Union. The main classical construction and building materials - metal, metal alloys, brick, wood, etc - no longer met the needs of the economy under conditions of rapid technological progress. There was a need for new materials and, of course, in the creation of appropriate machines and devices for existing and for new chemical technologies. There was a need to solve these problems in complex and at the modern technical level.
To overcome this complex problem without advanced engineering would be impossible. In 1928, as a part of the Faculty of Chemical Technology KPI, the Department of Chemical Engineering was created, and in 1931 – it was opened the evening department specialty "Chemical engineering" led by Professor O.S.Plyhunov - many years Rector of KPI, professor. Given the needs of the economy in 1938 it was founded Department of Chemical Engineering and Foundry. Corresponding member of USSR Academy of Sciences, prof. V.S.Vasylyev was appointed Dean of the Faculty. The structure of the newly created department, other than the Department of Chemical Engineering, included following departments: general chemical technology and hydraulics, pumps and compressors, technology of metals and metallurgy, foundry, graphics, safety. Today, they are parts of the others faculties.
The first issue of Mechanical Engineers was held at the Faculty in 1935 and consisted of 16 people, and in 1940 - 98 persons.
With a start of the Great Patriotic War many students and teachers have gone to the front, and the Institute was evacuated to the city Tashkent. After returning KPI to Kyiv in 1944, the training of specialists of the Chemical Engineering was carried out in the Mechanical department. In 1954 Faculty of Chemical Engineering reappeared in KPI, it was joined by department of silicates.
In the postwar years selfless hard work on the renovation and creation of material resources, the formation of teaching and support staff was carried out. Important role was played in this process by the recent veterans, students and teachers. Deans were great enthusiasts lecturers H.M.Kostenko, V.F.Dubovytskyy - former rector of the Kuibyshev Civil Engineering University.
From 1961 to 1980 the faculty was headed by the experienced, qualified engineer, production worker, later professor D.D.Ryabinin. It was created specialized academic council of thesis defense, where it was successfully defended more than 50 PhD theses of graduate students, staff KPI and other organizations.
In 1978 on the initiative of the rector of KPI prof. H.I.Denysenko with the participation of the Ministry of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the active participation of staff of the Faculty a new building №19, with an area of more than 5 thousand m2, was built. The lecturers B.B.Bulhakov, V.V.Honcharenko, A.I.Kubrak, M.Z.Kvasko, S.V.Sydorenko, V.V.Dobronohov, Ya.M.Korniyenko, Senior teacher P.H.Hlaz and other faculty teachers, staff and students were actively involved in the construction of the building.
In 1981, the Faculty was headed by prof. V.S.Kovalenko - a renowned expert in the field of laser technology and materials processing. At this time, the faculty included Department of Engineering Mechanics, headed by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences F.K.Ivanchenko. Professor V.S.Kovalenko made a significant contribution in promoting faculty internationally and later he headed the department of laser technology and construction materials. These two departments in 2000, were included in the modern Mechanical Engineering Institute.
A new stage in the beginning of the third millennium began with the advent of the dean Professor Ye.M.Panov. At the suggestion of the Rector Academician of NAS of Ukraine M. Zgurovsky and with the collective’s the Faculty was renamed to Faculty of Chemical Engineering. Faculty began to strengthen through financial contracts that are executed under the supervision Ye.M.Panov in the production of non-ferrous metals in Ukraine and Russia.A new scientific direction of study thermal properties of manufacturing processes ferrous metals. The faculty with leading experts NAS of Ukraine A specialized academic council for doctoral theses was created at the Faculty with participation of leading specialists NAS of Ukraine, updated collection of scientific papers publishing. The faculty includes Dept. of Environment and Technology of Plant Polymers and Department of Cybernetics of Chemical Technology Processes. Subsequently, the latter returned to the Faculty of Chemical Technology.
Currently, the faculty consists of four departments: the automation of chemical plants; chemical, polymer and silica machinery; machines and apparatus of chemical and petroleum industries; Environment and Technology of Plant Polymers and research laboratory of intensification and automation of drying; Laboratory of cleaner technologies; Scientific and Engineering Center "Chemical Engineering"; Research Center "saving technologies"; Branch of the Institute of Pre-university training; department of distance learning.
Now the staff of the Faculty consists of more than 1300 students of the full time, more than 350 absentee, 250 teachers (among them 12 professors), researchers and staff training and support staff, that is a powerful framework that prepares bachelors, masters, graduate students, researchers, performs research budget and self-work. Successfully implemented the Bologna system of training that is a prerequisite for entrance into the European educational space.
The faculty genealogy began with the Department of Chemical Engineering, which was renamed in 1979 to the department of chemical, polymer and silica engineering. The name corresponds to the direction of research and profiles of professional training, including:
