Today, January 28, is the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Hero of Ukraine, Major General of Aviation and Cosmonautics Leonid Kostyantynovych Kadenyuk. He is the first astronaut of independent Ukraine. Leonid Kadenyuk was a man with a big heart and boundless love for the Homeland.
Leonid Kadenyuk is an iconic figure for Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He is Honorary Doctor of the Faculty of Aerospace Systems, Deputy Chairman of the University Supervisory Board, Adviser to the Rector. Moreover, he has always actively promoted the training of specialists in this field. Besides, Leonid Kadenyuk has become an integral part of university life.
A bas-relief of Leonid Kadenyuk has set in the first building near room 177, where Leonid Kadenyuk worked as an adviser to the rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
In 2019, the State Polytechnic Museum of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute presented a mini-exposition about the life and work of Leonid Kadenyuk. Soon, new exhibits will add from the museum funds: the book of memoirs of the astronaut “Mission – Space”, the award “Star of the Astronaut Leonid Kadenyuk”, the banknote “Leonid Kadenyuk - the first astronaut of independent Ukraine”, issued by the National Bank of Ukraine on November 26, 2020. The banknote was presented to the University on November 22 on the 22nd anniversary of the STS-87 mission. The same day, the Leonid Kadenyuk Medal was founded and awarded for the first time.
