Associate Professor of the Department of Electric Welding Installations of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Yevheniia Chvertko will join the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
For Reference: The International Institute of Welding (IIW) is an international scientific and engineering body for welding, brazing, and related technologies. It includes the national welding societies from 50 countries around the world. The IIW participates in International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standardization activities in Technical Committee TC44 (welding and allied processes).
Just shortly before the competition, the IIW offered her to apply for the membership, so the election of Yevheniia Chvertko turned out unexpected for her and her colleagues:
“It was the IIW that offered to participate in the competition to the Board of Directors. I happened to be a perfect candidate because a balance between regions and activities is significant when choosing the Board members. The IIW wanted a representative from the education sector. They also welcome women because there are not so many of us in welding. Therefore, the IIW initiated my participation in the work of the Board of Directors.”
Yevheniia Chvertko will start working at the IIW in July. The renewed Board of Directors will be announced during the next international assembly. It will be possible to perform duties after relevant training. However, Yevheniia will be credited automatically in the first block of disciplines with professional ethics, avoidance of conflict of interest, and others because she passed the relevant test as an auditor of the International Welding Institute. She will only need to learn more about the tasks and responsibilities of workers in the Board of Directors of the IIW. These are decisive areas Ms. Yevheniia knows well:
“For several years now, the IIW has been implementing a project of attracting socially vulnerable categories to the profession: migrants, military personnel after completing their service, and those who have returned from prisons in the United States. Those are those people who may have a problem getting a job. I know the ins and outs of such activities, as I have participated in similar projects at my department. The IIW is likely to engage me in such projects.”
The election of an Associate Professor of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute to the IIW Board of Directors will promote the University's more active integration into the global welding industry. Yevheniia is sure that the world welding industry should know about the high level of Ukrainian specialists and involved them in cooperation:
“E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding includes a training and qualification center teaching under the IIW study programs. To date, we have prepared a memorandum to sign with the European Welding Federation. I hope we will sign a similar agreement with the International Institute of Welding. After all, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, as a leading technical university in Ukraine, wants to cooperate with leading institutions of an appropriate industry. As for welding, we ensure such cooperation. Now they know more about our University and Ukraine because they should know about us.”
Global Standards for Specialist Training at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute
The Paton Welding Institute Training and Qualification Centre is licensed for the training of welding personnel with responsibility according to the International Institute of Welding to the study programs: International Welding Engineer, International Welding Technologist, International Welding Inspector. On May 31, 2021, the International Institute of Welding certified the Training and Qualification Centre and extended the license for these study programs until 2026. The Centre has also received accreditation from the international system of education, assessment, and certification of welding personnel.
The Training and Qualification Centre trains not only bachelors, masters, and postgraduate students of E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding and other engineering faculties of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. It also prepares certified welding specialists of enterprises and institutions in Ukraine and other countries. The latest methodological resources of the Centre meet international requirements. The Centre uses textbooks for training international engineers, technologists, and inspectors of welders under the demands of the International Institute of Welding and trends in welding science and technology.
E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding, which supervises the Paton Welding Institute Training and Qualification Centre, started working on July 1, 2020. E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding is a new form of educational-scientific-production institution. It provides for close cooperation with the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and industrial enterprises. E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding is a member of the joint German-Ukrainian faculty at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg. It also participates in a double degree program with the Federal University of Uberlândia (Brazil). The Institute of Materials Science and Welding, as the division of the University, has a modern structure ensuring the complete life cycle of materials: creation, production, combination, application, and disposal. Such a cycle of work will attract new scientific and innovative projects. At the same time, it increases the contribution of Ukrainian science to modern materials science.
