International Museum Day is held annually throughout the world on May 18.
From 1902 to 1924, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute included the Engineering Museum, which played an essential role in training engineers.
The idea of creating a museum space based on Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was reborn in 1990 when the Republican Museum of the History of Foundry Production was established. The Museum got the foundry wing of campus 6, where a cupola furnace of the first half of the 20 century has been preserved.
In 1995, the State Polytechnic Museum of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was established and based on the Republican Museum of Foundry Production.
In May 2008, the Department of Aviation History and Cosmonautics was opened at the Museum. Igor Sikorsky. A permanent exhibition on aviation and astronautics and a collection of veterans of spaceports became the department gems. The Baikonur Cosmodrome veterans compiled the collection and brought the exhibits from the spaceport.
A modern technical museum is not only exhibits and excursions. It also includes scientific activity, for instance, research on the history of science and technology, conferences, publications in periodicals and mass media, preparation and presentation of dissertations on the history of science and technology.
