February 25, 2020, at the KPI Electronics Faculty of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, with the support of the IT company GlobalLogic Ukraine, the research laboratory "KPI - GlobalLogic Ukraine" was opened. In the new laboratory, students will learn embedded systems design technology, one of the most sophisticated IT-direction, dealing with the development of embedded solutions and software for them, such as medical devices, a variety of automobile applications, computer vision systems, onboard computers, etc.
"We have received a laboratory with up-to-date equipment, the availability of which will allow carry out integrated training of specialists who will be able to develop software for various specialised systems. Creating it at the Faculty of Electronics has a double meaning. Firstly, more than half of the graduates of the faculty works in IT companies, and secondly, they mostly develop not only their own embedded systems but also software for them. Therefore, the possibility of integrated training of future specialists and the acquisition of skills to develop both hardware and software for it, that way it is extremely useful and promising ", - said the first Vice-Rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Yuriy Yakymenko.
For GlobalLogic Ukraine company, the creation of such a laboratory is an investment in the training of its future employees and the development of the industry in Ukraine in general. During the past 5 years, the number of embedded engineers in Ukraine has almost doubled, but their foot print in the market in 2019 is only 2.9% of the total number of technicians.
Despite growing the industry by 20-25% annually during the last 5 years, the number of engineers within a particular field is increasing by fits and start. Thus, the percent of embedded developers among all technical professionals barely exceeded 3%, while web development was actively progressing, as well as the development of applications and games.
The same tendency is observed everywhere. There are around 315,000 profiles of embedded systems developers in the world. At the same time, more than half of them (156 thousand) are in the USA, India and Germany. For comparison, there are about 2.5 thousand Ukrainian embedded developers (less than 1%) registered on LinkedIn. GlobalLogic cooperates with more than 900 Ukrainian engineers with experience in embedded systems development.
"It means a lot, that our graduates mostly satisfy the requirements of Global Logic's embedded specialists. With regard to our immediate plans, we are going to hold a student competition for the GlobalLogic Embedded Students Challenge, and next year to organise and hold of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad on embedded programming" commented the head of the department of design of electronic computing equipment Alexander Lysenko.
GlobalLogic Ukraine allocated almost 700,000 UAH and the necessary equipment to set up a laboratory in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Space is divided into two parts the first one is a specialised computer class with 25 seats for students and 1 place for a teacher. Hear students will be engaged in programming on the Linux operating system. The second part is a prototype zone with 5 seats with modern monitoring and measuring devices (500 MHz oscilloscopes, functional generators, power supply sources and soldering stations), with the help of which you can debug embedded-development and implement your code on the basis of Embedded Starter Kit that is a platform created within the GlobalLogic Education training project. It is a basic electronic module that is complemented by peripheral sensors, display and other necessary components for the development of embedded solutions. With such an arsenal of equipment, students can create a completely off the peg product.
For example, a prototype of a smart home with automatic watering, temperature sensors and measurement of harmful gases, or a driver monitoring system that signals that the driver is distracted by a phone call or fell asleep while driving. These systems are created on the basis of Embedded Starter Kit and this is the kind of development that will be taught for students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
Now, two laboratories are being introduced in the established laboratory for students of the department of design of electronic computing equipment. The first one is a joint training course with Embedded Linux with GlobalLogic Ukraine engineers, and the second one is dedicated to the study of embedded system design technologies based on the Embedded Starter Kit platform. Later, both courses are planned to be optional subjects for all students of this faculty.
