The grand opening of the engineering competitions “EVES – 2020”, which was organized by the students’ organization Best Kyiv, was held at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic University.
During 8 days the participants will attend training and lectures, and, most importantly, will fight for victory in the first stage of the competition - for the right to represent Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic University in all-Ukrainian competitions.
Between 250 students, who applied, were selected only 80 students. They are divided into 20 teams - 4 participants each. They will compete in two categories - 10 teams each. Team Design - Creating a device with your own hands that will have the necessary characteristics. Case Study - finding an effective analytics solution. The winners will compete with students from other cities of Ukraine. The final is a competition with teams representing Europe. It will be held next year in Warsaw.
For students, engineering competitions “EVES” are not just a bright event and exciting competitions. It is also an opportunity for useful networking and chances for successful employment: the partners of the competition are large companies whose representatives communicate with the participants.
“The important thing is that at these competitions students are already in direct contact with employers. They learn how to solve the engineering problems of their specialization, which they will encounter in their work, apply their skills. Such competitions open up opportunities for them to participate in international competitions, hackathons, to represent our university at the country and abroad level, ”explains the head of the Career Development Center Natalia Pozharska. She asserts that employers are interested in such competitions as they can be not only sponsors but also the jury, in particular, when designing the task.
“Polytechnicians are very popular with employers. These competitions include communication between company representatives and students. This is very important: students can ask a potential employer a question purely in their specialization, and a dialogue begins to develop”,- tells about the benefits of “EVES” engineering competitions, Ms. Natalia.
The competition is gradually gaining popularity among students: 104 students have applied for “EVES-2015”, and this year - about 250 students. The majority - about 80% - are students of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd year.
The organizers of the event believe that the number of persons who have a willingness to participate in the competition can and should increase, and the organizers make every effort to do so.
“I think Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic University could have a little more than 250 applications, because we have a lot of technical specialties. But we are working on different methods of engaging students in our activities. We are students ourselves, we are not professionals, we experiment, analyze and work to make our events better, ”said the student of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic University Denis Gritchuk, who heads BEST Kyiv this year.
