November 13, 2014, the conference "Resource efficiency of the enterprises of Kyiv region" was held in NTUU “KPI”. It was organized by the Center for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (CRECP), working within the framework of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), "Promoting the adaptation and implementation of resource-efficient and cleaner production through the establishment and operation of cleaner production centers in Ukraine. "

The conference was attended by the chief specialist of the Strategic Planning of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine Nelia N. Chernenko, Adviser to the Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Lyudmila Musina, Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Policy of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Vasily Pavlyuk, Project Coordinator UNIDO Petra Schwager, Deputy head of Mission, First Secretary of the Embassy of Austria in Ukraine Johannes Aigner, project coordinator for the sustainable use of energy resources of the Swiss cooperation Office in Ukraine Anna Kuznetsova. There were also representatives of the companies - participants of the project with a resource-efficient and cleaner production in the Kyiv region in 2013-2014., representatives of enterprises, educational institutions and public organizations of the Kyiv region, as well as representatives of financial institutions such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), the German-Ukrainian Fund, JSC "Ukreximbank" PJSC "MEGABANK" and experts of the Center resource-efficient and cleaner production.

In total, 98 people participated in the conference, including representatives of 20 industrial enterprises of Kyiv region.

During his welcoming speech Rector of NTUU "KPI" Michael Zgurovsky noted that for the university it is a great honor to be involved in the introduction of the concept of resource efficiency and cleaner production in the UNIDO project. Deputy Director of the Department of Industrial Policy of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Vasily Pavlyuk said that during two years much has been done through the joint cooperation of the Ministry and CRECP. First Secretary of the Embassy of Austria in Ukraine Johannes Aigner focused on the fact that the Austrian government would be happy to support CRECP, because resource-efficient and cleaner production - this is the way in which the Ukrainian will be able to move closer to European standards. Project coordinator for the sustainable use of energy resources of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine Anna Kuznetsova noted that in 2013, thanks to CRECP many enterprises have implemented approaches resource-efficient and cleaner production. In the Swiss Cooperation Office understand that businesses are now extremely important to remain profitable and economic indicators presented CRECP will help to develop the enterprise in modern conditions of Ukraine. Director of the Department of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (UUIE) on corporate security Sergei Khudobin noted that UUIE was one of the founders of CRECP, is a reliable partner of the Center, and provides all possible support in the search for enterprises in the regions to participate in the project, the establishment of regional offices.

Project Coordinator UNIDO Petra Schwager in her speech noted that UNIDO is almost the only unit of the United Nations, which works directly with companies. Now the project of UNIDO's resource efficient and cleaner production is implemented in more than 50 countries. Mrs. Schwager noted that resource efficiency is a very important aspect of human activity, because the world population is growing as the number of middle-class, but the resources are not increasing. It is therefore important that approach, whereby one can produce more products, using fewer resources. Supporting companies to introduce new technologies, UNIDO helps to use less water, energy and material resources.

Director of the Center for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Igor Leonidovich Shilovich in the presentation of the project outlined areas of cooperation with local companies and services for energy resource efficiency for businesses. One of the main areas of assistance CRECP for businesses is the ability to save the use of an energy source such as natural gas, because for every dollar of GDP in Ukraine 60% of the costs associated with the use of natural gas, up to ten times higher than in European countries. Director of the Center urged entrepreneurs to join the project in order to improve enterprise performance and competitiveness.

The main objective of the project was to demonstrate the possibilities of UNIDO enhance the competitiveness of domestic enterprises by reducing the overhead of energy, materials and water, resulting in savings of production costs and reduce the amount of waste and pollution. The conference presented the Center's services and explained the methodology of work in this direction. First step is choice the promising Ukrainian companies (including such industries: metal and metal, building materials, chemical, food and agro-processing), which correspond to the eligibility requirements. Then representatives of the Center resources efficiently and cleaner production, together with the specialists of the enterprise carried out in these enterprises technical audit of the production process by the balances of material and energy resources, develop technical solutions to reduce the cost of energy, water and raw materials while reducing waste and negative impact on the environment. At the last stage center helps in finding investors for the practical implementation of certain measures.

IFC representative Olga Yakimenko noted that under the agreement CRECP and IFC,  Corporation provides advisory support to the Center. The aim of this cooperation is to promote investments in cleaner production, introduction of modern technologies and helping to improve the economic and environmental performance of Ukrainian enterprises. Also in 2014, the Centre signed a cooperation agreement with the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) to provide support for investment projects of the Centre. Sergei Novoselov gave a presentation on successful examples of credit lines to enterprises of Ukraine.

Conference "Resource efficiency of the enterprises of Kyiv region" was designed to expand the number of participants in the project of UNIDO, to attract new businesses and public awareness, companies, academia and other stakeholders about the Center and the project. The participants will share experience in implementing resource efficiency and cleaner production in enterprises and financing projects aimed at improving the resource efficiency of enterprises.

Representatives of the companies expressed their gratitude for the work CRECP and offer specific technical options that will help reduce the costs of enterprises and prevent a negative impact on the environment.
