From the history of the faculty
Back in 1962, on the basis of two specialties - "Gyroscopic Instruments and Systems" and "instruments of precision mechanics" – it was created in KPI Instrument department. It was a time of early successes in space, time, which promised great prospects. Instrumentalists and their colleagues have come a long way of growth and development.
The founder and first dean of the faculty (1962-1974) Professor Alexander Davidovich Trubenok gave a lot of energy for its organization and development, and at the same time he headed the Department of instruments of precision mechanics. The identity of the first dean made a significant impact on the image of the faculty: it was very prestigious to study there.
Significant contribution to the further formation of the educational process and the development of research in the faculty was made by the Honored Worker of Higher School of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Academician of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine, member of many international societies and academies, Professor Vladimir Alexandrovich Astafiev, who led the faculty in 1974-1995 years and also headed the Department of Instrumentation Technology.
By the time the state of the faculty already included 5 PhD, professors and 37 Ph.D., associate professors. There were here 1,100 full-time students and 360 - evening and correspondence courses. It was started a fruitful collaboration with industrial, scientific and design organizations. It was established the branch of the department at "factory" Arsenal " of Artem, SPA" Quantum ", SPA" Gidropribor "in the design institute" Analitpribor ", Institute of Physics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and others.
There were concluded long-term cooperation agreements with the institutions of education and science in Germany, Bulgaria and Poland. It was organized interstate exchange of teachers for training and scientific training, exchange of students for study or practical training. Leading faculty members were invited to give lectures on special courses in certain educational institutions in Canada, the United States, Cuba, Japan, Bulgaria, Algeria.
In 1995-2000 the Head of the Department of Instrument Technology, Scientific Secretary "KPI", Honored Worker of Higher School of Ukraine, academician of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Valentin Rumbeshta was the Dean of the Faculty.
Since 2000 the faculty is headed by Prof. Gregory S. Timchik, a specialist in the field of laser electro-optical systems and technologies for their production. He is a graduate of the Department of optical and optoelectronic devices founded by Assoc. G.V.Stanevich in 1963. Having extensive research and teaching experience gained in Higher Military School, G.V.
