In 2024, it will be 60 years since the chairman of the Academic Council of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Mykhailo Ilchenko received a diploma in radio engineering from KPI.
In general, 65 years of his life have been connected with the university, as he entered the Faculty of Radio Engineering of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1959! 40 years of these six and a half decades were spent in senior positions at the university level, where he made a significant contribution to the development of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which, in turn, greatly contributed to the emergence of our university as a leader in higher education in Ukraine.

1. For many years, Mykhailo Yukhymovych worked as Vice-Rector for Research at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. In 2019, he was elected Chairman of the Academic Council of the University. We were the first in Ukraine to implement a model of separation of powers between the rector and the chairman of the Academic Council. Mykhailo Yukhymovych has gained experience in the new form of the Council's activities and the systematic participation of the Council's standing committees in the preparation of draft decisions, so it is now impossible to make any important decision to ensure the educational, scientific, organisational, economic and other activities of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute without prior consideration and recommendations of these committees. In addition, the standing committees of the Academic Council of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute participate in the examination of draft regulations in the field of higher education and science, etc. A significant result of Mykhailo Ilchenko's activity was also the publication of the anniversary book ‘KPI. The Second Century. Continuation of Traditions’ and the completion of the eight-volume edition of “Outstanding Designers of Ukraine”, which was prepared under his leadership.

For 15 years, Mykhailo Ilchenko successfully led the Council of Vice-Rectors for Scientific Work of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and directors of scientific institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, which contributed to the dissemination of significant experience in science management in KPI, as well as support for KPI scientists, 110 of whom were awarded state prizes in science and technology.

Mykhailo Ilchenko is the founder of the branch laboratory of the Ministry of Industry and Communications (1976), which grew into the Research Institute of Telecommunications (2000) under the auspices of the Department of Informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; in 1993 he founded a new Department of Telecommunications in the structure of KPI. He is the founder and scientific director of the Educational and Research Institute of Telecommunication Systems (2002), which has trained 1835 bachelors, 685 masters, 12 doctors and 38 candidates of sciences during its successful activity. Among the prominent ITS graduates is Oleksandr Konotopskyi, the leader in the production of 137 security devices in Europe for more than 2.5 million users. Forbes magazine also recognised 8 successful ITS graduates.
4. M.Y. Ilchenko is the founder and head of the KPI Scientific School of Telecommunications and Radio Engineering, which currently includes more than 50 people. He has personally trained more than 20 scientists, including 6 Doctors of Sciences and more than 15 Candidates of Sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
5. Currently, Mykhailo Ilchenko is the scientific director of ITS and a professor at the Department of Telecommunications. He provides support for the disciplines ‘Introduction to the speciality’, ‘Master's Research’, supervises doctoral and postgraduate students. He proposed and is implementing the author's project ‘Telecom News’, which is more than 300 news from the telecommunications sector throughout the year, posted daily on the ITS information network.
6. As a chief researcher, Academician Mykhailo Ilchenko is the scientific leader of the NRFU projects for 3 years to 2025 in the amount of UAH 9 million. He is also the scientific leader of the NATO research project in 2023-2025. Organiser of initiative topics in the defence sector.
7. In 2023-2024, Academician M. Ilchenko is the sole leader among Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute scientists in terms of the number of scientific papers indexed in the Scopus scientometric database. The number of such works has reached 200! He is included in the list of 1000 scientists of Ukraine cited in publications indexed in Scopus (there are 18 such scientists in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute).
8. Academician M.Y. Ilchenko, as Deputy Academic Secretary of the Department of Informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, supports the communication of academic and university scientists. He is a member of the Scientific and Publishing Council of the NASU, a member of the NASU Space Research Council, a member of the section of the Borys Paton National Prize Committee.
9. Mykhailo Yukhymovych is a three-time laureate of the State Prizes in Science and Technology (USSR - 1983, USSR - 1989, Ukraine - 2004).
10. Chairman of the Specialised Academic Councils for the Defence of Dissertations, which have been operating since 1982. In total, more than 100 dissertations were defended in these councils, including 35 by ITS scientists and 28 by RTF scientists.
