Department of Ecological Biotechnology and Bioenergetics FBT was established in 2004 on the initiative of the Rector of "KPI" Academician M. Zgurovsky. The main areas of educational and research activities of the department are bioenergy, environmental biotechnologies – biotechnologies of wastewater treatment of different origin, extraction and beneficiation of minerals, processing of industrial and domestic waste, etc.. The basis of the educational activities for preparation Masters of ecological biotechnology and bioenergy laid tight integration of teaching and research, including the use of research findings in the practice of teaching students that corresponds the concept of NTU KPI, as research university.Za eight years the department has passed the initial period of development, has gained valuable experience that may be useful to other "young" departments of our university.

For eight years the department has passed the initial period of development, has gained valuable experience that can be useful to others, "young" departments of our university.

In its content, ratio of biotech and chemical and technological core disciplines of the curriculum in "Environmental Biotechnology and Bioenergy", can be roughly defined as 70% of biotech direction and 30% of chemical and technological. At the same time on 1 January 2005 15% of teachers had a biological education, 85% - chemical and technological and chemical, and no one with biotechnological. Therefore, one of the urgent tasks of the reporting period was appropriate staffing adjustments. In 2011, DEB ratio of lecturers was 34% of biotech education, 28 - of chemical technology, 24 - biological and 14 - with the chemical. The growth of the biotechnological component is carried out by the best graduates of DEB - from the very first release in 2010, the department employed two graduates of the Master and Specialist, in 2011 - Master. The average age of the faculty members - 44 years, teaching and support staff - 40 years.

Based on the fact that almost all disciplines (over 20) are taught first in Ukraine without ready textbooks, all teachers of the department have electronic versions of lectures and work out the filing of material and laboratory workshops for creating high-quality textbooks and teaching aids. Today teachers of DEB prepared and published four books (3 stamped MESYS), 5 manuals, including 2 stamped MESYS 11 guidelines and laboratory workshops, as well as several books for applicants.

Laboratory and graduate works are performed both on base of DEB laboratories and on the branch offices of the department and under the contracts about cooperation in the institutes of the NAS of Ukraine. The department created a series of installations for laboratory and research in biotechnology and water purification and obtaining of electricity and hydrogen, one of them - "bioconveyor" is a permanent exhibit of the Science Park "KPI".

To further improvement of teaching methods for disciplines held public lectures, seminars and workshops for students. The department operates scientific and methodical seminar, in which participate the leading specialists of the NAS of Ukraine, other organizations and businesses, and students to discuss the urgent issues of the department. In 2011, on the basis of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic" held a joint seminar of DEB and Department of Technology of Biologically Active Substances, Pharmacy and Biotechnology, where the Departments exchanged information on teaching and methodical and scientific and innovative activity and reached a cooperation agreement.

To ensure the database of production practices, carrying out laboratory sessions and working out materials for diploma projects and jobs has been created DEB branches at the Institute of Bioorganic and Petrol Chemistry and at the Institute of Biocolloidal Chemistry named after. F.D. Ovcharenko Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as at the Ukrainian Institute of the Expertise of Plant Varieties State Service of Plant Variety Protection of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine. Signed cooperation agreements with a number of institutions of NAS of Ukraine and profile enterprises and institutions.

Professor P.I Gvozdyaka comes forward.

The subject of the research work (RW) of Ekobiotechnology and Bioenergetics Department (DEB) corresponds to priority directions of SciTech development - «National nature using and strategic priority directions of innovative activity in Ukraine at 2009-2013; «Perfection of chemical technologies, new materials, development of biotechnologies»; «Protection and human and environmental recovery». 5 monographs are published with participation of lecturers and students of DEB, one of them is foreign, one is prepared for an electronic edition; 110 articles in professional editions, 10 – with participation of students; 270 theses of lecturers, 140 – with participation of students, 110 of them – by students independently; 13 patents, 2 – with participation of students.

As a result of RW conception which consists of the complex approach to cleaning of high concentrated sewage of industrial enterprises and cities is produced. Anaerobic-aerobic biotechnology of sewage cleaning is inculcated on cleansing buildings of VAT «Slavuta malt factory», Slavuta (in 2010); at the cleansing station of ROVKP VKG «Rivneoblvodokanal» the technology of multistage anaerobic-aerobic cleaning of city sewage with the use of immobilize microorganisms was inculcated (in 2012). The results of RW were used in disciplines, such as: «Hydrobiology», «Biotechnology of water treatment», « Hydro ecology»; «Biological and chemical sensory systems», «Biochemistry of ksenobiotiks» etc.

Thanks to the results of these RW, doctor of the department, an associate professor L.A.Sably prepared and defended his thesis in 2012 year on «Physical, chemical and biological cleaning of high concentrated sewage», 2 monographs were published; it is inculcated master degree-candidate of sciences through computer-integrated preparation; 5 graduate students execute dissertation works; 1 manual textbook and more than 20 articles are published, 5 patents of Ukraine are got.

The scientific work on the subject of environmental technology and bioenergy annually attracted about 20 students, there were defended 10 graduation projects on the subject of the GDR, eight master works. In 2011, two graduates of the master DEB were awarded with the NAS Prize of Ukraine for complex scientific work "Bioelektrochemich producing of electrical energy and hydrogen".

The combination of research and education significantly promote students of foreign training. So, DEB students participated in various international summer schools: in Germany in Bonn Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, Technical University of Cottbus LS Mechanische Verahrenstechnic, Luneburg University, University of Bochum, Federal Institute for Material Research and Testing for grants DAAD; " New solutions to old problems - Biotechnology for a sustainable future "Sweden, Lund University; Koszalin and the Warsaw Polytechnic, senior students have participated and made presentations at conferences at various levels: Vilnius University, Lithuania, Moscow State University. Lomonosov MV, Russia and others.

Postgraduate K. Schurska makes a report at a seminar in Gdansk. K. Schurska PhD student doing a report on a seminar in Gdansk. All students of DEB enrolled in the Bachelor" master for admission to graduate must have publication and report on scientific conferences at various levels. Several graduate students have successfully completed the program by research grants, won competitions for financial support for research of the students and post-graduates of NTUU "KPI". In 2011, a fourth-year student of DEB entered the magistracy in Bonn Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (Germany, Bonn) and a third-year student got a grant by the International Fulbright pursuant master's program in the United States.

As a positive result of teaching and researching inseparability in the making of ecobiotechnology and bioenergy department in NTUU "KPI", we cite such factors of DEB among other departments of the University in 2011.

The most rated faculty of DEB - 4th place - 2269 points (average score on the NTUU "KPI" - 1586). Teaching work of DEB - 10th place - 1170 points (average score on the NTUU "KPI" - 969). Research and innovation work of DEB - 8th place - 743 points (average score on the NTUU "KPI"

E.V.Kuz'minskiy, doctor of chemical science, professor, manager of Ekobiotechnology and Bioenergy Department.
