1 September, 2009 Faculty of Chemical Technology, KPI, one of the leading departments, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The story began when Olexandr Olexandrovych Pashchenko defended his doctoral theses for the degree Doctor of Science and clubbed together near himself the number of talented students who made a core of team in the Department of Chemical Technology of composite materials that was created from the Department of Silicates Technology in 1969.
The period of 1969 - 1989 was a productive year for the employees of the department - professors, scientists, laboratory assistants. Training of silicate profile specialists as main form of activity was followed by basic and applied research, which greatly influenced on the educational process. O.O. Pashchenko created and headed the scientific school, which, was on the level with typical KPIs problem (extension of silicate manufacturing of the raw materials resource base) worked in the field of theoretical bases of silicate materials technology. It was created new classification of composite materials, determined rules of formation composite materials characteristics, theories modification construction materials by element organic surfaces, formation of stability new type element organic binders. Under the O.O. Pashchenko’s direction firstly in the global practice was developed and implemented in pilot-scale industrial technology of Portland cement clinker charges without fine grinding components.
Typical problem of raw materials resource base expansion was supplemented by problems of raw material processing and non-waste technology, saving energy resources. Theoretical bases and a number of technologies for the use of phosphogypsum, fercromic slag and bauxite slurry, reducing energy intensity of cement production were developed.
In 1981 employees (V.A.Sviderskyi, V.Ya.Kruhlytska, L.A.Shevchenko) of the Department under O.O. Pashchenko’s direction were awarded the Stative Prize of Ukraine in Science for the work in the field of silicone coating protection.
Evaluate the achievements, we always remember our predecessor. Therefore, training the specialists of silicate profile at KPI was started from the first days of its establishment. We owed the KPI’s luminaries professors, our predecessors, such as K.H.Dementiev, B.S.Lysin, O.O.Alentiev, O.V.Ralko.
The Science School of Silicates Technology began to create K.H.Dementiev. He is multi-faceted nature and as head department of mineral technology and construction materials, he started his practice by writing the training manuals on different fields of mineral technology. He penned 40 books about chemistry, chemical technology and heat engineering building materials, chemical control of manufacturing. To this work K.H.Dementiev widely attracted colleagues and students of department. His work was continued by his successor and student - B.S.Lysin. Owing to the outstanding abilities B.S.Lysin instantly after graduation from the KPI in 1909 was left in the KPI as an assistant of professor. K.H.Dementiev, and in 1921 headed the department of silicate technology.
Directly under his direction was established kaolin industry of Ukraine. He directed the reconstruction and improvement of existing cement factories, headed the Commission of studying the new cement factories construction in Ukraine.
Intensively were studied raw materials of new deposits and were implemented for the manufacturing of cement. Owing to these developments the country's cement industry was leading branch of industry.
Multifaceted talent of B.S.Lysina developed in the breadth of issues that were included. One of the original and notable researches of team was development of non-plumbic and lead-free enamel that allowed discovering a great amount of valuable metals to national economy. On his post as head of the department of silicates technology B.S.Lysin replaced professor O.O.Alentiev, the main scientific direction of the research were refractory materials, including their manufacturing from brine lakes Sivash and then Ph.D., professor O.V.Ralko who created the thermodynamic and thermo chemical direction of research silicates. Further, is worthy O.O. Pashchenko continue the work of predecessors.
On the recommendations of professor O.H.Yurchenko (at that time - Dean FCT), professor V.A.Sviderskyi and Ph.D. A.P.Pidnebesnyi who is director of ASP "Elastik" were carried out large organizational work, and in 1991 made the first admission of students on a specialty "Technology of plastics processing", and in 1997 - was the first graduators of specialists.
Continuing the best traditions of predecessors, the pedagogic team of the department prepared a series of manuals, methodological rationales and study aids to ensure high quality of training bachelors and masters. Manuals, authored by our lecturers have popularity in Ukraine and countries of the near abroad - Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. Textbook "Binding materials", "Physical chemistry of silicates", "General technology of silicates", "Energy-saving and non-waste technology getting of binders materials" published under the general editorship O.O. Pashchenko. Nowadays the pedagogue team continues to work to ensure students of the methodological developments department by professions.
The scientific school impact on the department of chemical technology of composite materials on the level of training in higher education is carried out in several directions.
1. By means of a number graduates of the department, postgraduate and doctoral when it qualified pedagogue staff (lectors). Almost 80% of the pedagogue staff of the department have academic degree. The current staff is the founders’ students of scientific school "Composite Materials" O.O. Pashchenko and its current head V.A.Sviderskyi.
2. By means of the inclusion of scientific achievements in the scientific school curricula special courses for training specialists with higher education in the field of "Chemical technology of refractory non-metal and silicate materials" and "Polymer processing technology." Among them: 1) "Base technology of refractory nonmetallic silicate materials"; 2) "Chemical technology binders and composite materials"; 3) "Informational ensuring of researches of composite materials"; 4) "Composite materials"; 5) "Surface Chemistry and fundamentals of forming protective coatings"; 6) "Special research methods of silicate and polymer systems"; 7) "Technology of processing of polymers and elastomers"; 8) "Nature of binders properties and chemical technology of inorganic binders"; 9) "Physical-chemical mechanics of dispersed systems"; 10) " Chemistry of Macromolecular compounds and elastomers" and others.
3. By means of monographs, textbooks, manuals, lecture course preparation and publication, creation of laboratory practical work that is based on scientific researches made by scientists and lecturers of the department.
4. By means of attraction to fulfil, student’s and master’s of the department, scientific researches, working under the direction of the department and researchers. Traditionally, students of the 5th year receive individual task from a special discipline, which is directly connected with the scientific direction of the department. The results of scientific researches of findings masters and students published in collaboration with lectors and researchers and proceeding with feature patents on invention. Using scientific developments in the training process helps for the preparation of bachelors, engineers, prepares the basis for masters and postgraduate training.
The Chemical Technology of composite materials department cooperates with Universities and Institutes of science in many countries. Confirmation of this is the International Conference "Composite materials", is organized by the department staff. In 2009 it was held for the fourth time. Its feature was that it was conducted with the use of modern means of information exchange (Internet). Gained positive experience we will use in the future.
It is worth mentioning the employees department, which form the basis of the team.
Nowadays the Department of Chemical Technology of composite materials headed Professor, laureate of State Prize of Ukraine, academician of AES of Ukraine and the New York Academy of Sciences, honored worker of Science and Engineering of Ukraine Valentyn Anatoliiovych Sviderskyi widely known among the scientific community by developments in branch of silicon protective surfaces, composite-element materials and chemical technology of silicate materials.
