At the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the pace of change shaping the future of Ukraine's energy sector is especially evident. One of the driving forces behind these transformations is Doctor of Engineering Sciences Denys Hryhorovych Derevianko.
The university community has recently once again recognized his significant contribution to research by naming him one of the winners of the prestigious Young Lecturer-Researcher competition. This distinction is a natural continuation of his remarkable professional journey.
Today, Denys Hryhorovych serves as Head of the Department of Power Systems Automation, successfully combining the qualities of a strategic leader and an accomplished researcher. His journey at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute began in 2010, when he graduated with a master's degree in Electric Power Consumption Systems. Even then, the young researcher demonstrated a strong interest in the complex processes of power supply and local electric power systems, which ultimately led to the successful defense of his PhD dissertation in 2016 under the supervision of Professor Serhii Denysiuk. His greatest academic achievement came in January 2025 with the defense of his Doctor of Engineering Sciences dissertation, Development of the Scientific Foundations for the Optimal Interaction of Distributed Energy Resources in Local Electric Power Systems. This research has made a significant contribution to the development of Microgrid concepts, which are critically important for strengthening Ukraine's energy security and resilience under current conditions.
By 2026, the scientist's research portfolio included more than 70 publications, reflecting both the depth and practical significance of his work. These comprise 35 articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, many of which are indexed in the Scopus database, as well as four monographs that have become valuable reference works for specialists in the field. The practical impact of his research is further demonstrated by seven Ukrainian copyright certificates covering innovations related to the integration of active consumers (prosumers) into electricity markets and the optimization of Smart Grid systems.
International engagement is another important dimension of Denys Derevianko's professional profile. His career clearly demonstrates that science knows no borders. Thanks to his strong command of English (B2 level), he actively participates in international projects, including SEMISE and initiatives funded through the Erasmus+ and NAWA programmes.
Professional training and research visits to Austria and Poland have enabled him to incorporate leading European practices into the educational process at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Particularly noteworthy is his role as co-coordinator of the double-degree programme with the Warsaw University of Technology in the field of Next-Generation Electric Power Engineering and Energy Markets, creating new opportunities for Kyiv Polytechnic students to become part of the global academic and research community.
As Head of the Department of Power Systems Automation, Denys Hryhorovych places great emphasis on the quality of education. Under his leadership, five academic programmes were successfully accredited at the Department of Power Supply. In particular, the bachelor's programme Energy Management and Energy-Efficient Technologies, for which he served as the programme guarantor, successfully underwent international accreditation in 2025, confirming its compliance with international quality standards and its global recognition. He is now applying this experience to the education of future power engineering specialists at the Department of Power Systems Automation of the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, which he currently heads.
At the heart of Denys Derevianko's work is his commitment to mentoring the next generation of engineers. As the supervisor of the Smart Grid Systems with Distributed Energy Resources research group, he actively engages undergraduate and doctoral students in cutting-edge research, where theoretical knowledge is transformed into practical solutions for the energy sector. Preparing a new generation of engineers capable of designing and managing intelligent power systems is not merely a professional responsibility for him—it is a personal mission. In addition, Denys Hryhorovych serves as an active member of specialized dissertation councils and the editorial boards of academic journals, including Scientific Works of Vinnytsia National Technical University, reflecting the high regard in which he is held by the scientific community. As Chair of the Programme Committee of the International Conference on Energy Smart Systems (ESS), he brings together leading experts from around the world, strengthening Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute's position as an international hub for scientific dialogue on the future of energy systems. Denys Derevianko's career is a compelling example of how academic excellence, international collaboration, and the vision of a new generation of leaders can shape the future of Ukrainian science today.
