The Life of Mr. Laser. Marking the 85th Anniversary of the Birth of Volodymyr Kovalenko, Founder of Ukrainian Laser Technology

The history of Igor Sikorsky Polytechnic Institute is shaped by individuals whose achievements have defined the university's academic and human legacy for generations. One of the most distinguished among them is Professor Volodymyr Serhiiovych Kovalenko, whose contribution continues to inspire the university community. On June 20, 2026, the university marked the 85th anniversary of the birth of this outstanding scientist, whose research and teaching career was as focused and purposeful as the laser beam he devoted his life to mastering.

Two holidays almost coincide in time—All-Ukrainian Library Day and Education Workers' Day. As noted by the famous Ukrainian educator and publicist Vasyl Sukhomlynsky, “a library is a temple where spirituality is always born and preserved.” This year, these holidays coincided with the 45th anniversary of the H.I. Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library building. On this occasion, a round table discussion entitled “Community Space” was held there.

Volodymyr Khilchevsky: From a "black soldier" to a professor

On February 20, a round table dedicated to Volodymyr Khilchevskyi, a prominent Ukrainian scientist in the field of mechanical engineering technology, professor, and World War II soldier, was held in the Rare Books Room of the Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library. The meeting was organized by the staff of the E.O. Paton Institute of Materials Science and Welding and its Department of Laser Engineering and Physical and Technical Technologies, the State Polytechnic Museum and the KPI Scientific and Technical Library. The roundtable continued the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the scientist's birth, which our newspaper wrote about in #3-4 of January 25 this year. 

State Polytechnic Museum celebrated World Space Week

World Space Week 2024 was once again marked by massive scientific and educational events on space topics held on different continents and in different countries. Since 2000, it has been celebrated annually from October 4 to 10, although many events in its honor take place around the world outside of these dates.
