Older people still remember well the epic that was played out in the Arctic Ocean in the early 40-ies of XX century. Primarily the United States and the Soviet Union and also some other countries were involved in that epic. Heroic fame of papanintsy lives in folk memory.
Anton Alexander Skudra (Antoni Aleksander Skudro) was born in 1882 in Mogilev on Podillya. He graduated from the gymnasium in Kishinev, studied at the Kiev university at mathematical faculty. In 1901. He was expelled from the university for participation in illegal students strike.
Shanyavsky Karol (Karol Szaniawski) was born in 1891 in Ukraine, Cherkassy district, Rotmystrovtsi. His father was a family doctor. He graduated from high school in Yelyzavethrad (now Kirovograd) and in 1909 was enrolled to the mechanical department of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
Alexander Zygmunt Dobzhansky was born in Volyn in the village Zazyvav in 1891. In 1909 he entered the KPI, where in 1914 became a junior assistant at the Faculty of Chemistry, and in 1917 received a diploma of engineer chemist.
Ian Hirtler was born in 1879 in the town.Lukow. He graduated from grammar school in Siedlce, studied at the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute, and after the break due to the student strike moved to Kyiv, where in 1907 he graduated from KPI, receiving a diploma of engineering and technology.
Stanislav Kanevsky was born in 1881, graduated from the Mechanical department of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. During the study he participated in the activities of the Polish organizations: student’s corporation of KPI and also fraternal assistance at KPI.
Jan Graff was born in 1885. In 1914 he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of KPI. From 1919 in Poland he took part in the construction of the railway Vydzev - Zgierz and Zgierz - Lenchyka.
December 22 to our editor’s office came gray-haired man. He was friendly smiling, he introduced us as a former student of KPI Utkur Hadaybayev. 40 years have been passed since the end of the university, and on this day his classmates meet to mark this anniversary date.
Leon Borowski was born in 1884 in Humany in the Podillia of the family doctor. High School graduated there in 1903 in the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1913 received the bachelor's Civil Engineering Department.
Witold Kazimierz Vezheyskyy (Witold Kazimierz Wierzejski) was born in 1882 in the village Derebchyn (Yampolsky district) in the Podillia, the son of a sugar factory worker. He studied at the school in Vinnytsia. In 1900 he became a student of mechanical department of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
