35, 41, 61, or 127, or: A Young Department with a Century of Experience

The tumultuous year 2025 is drawing to a close. Amid the whirlwind of events, anxieties, struggles, and everyday concerns, a moment has arisen to indulge in a philosophical and historical reflection and take a look at the history of the Department of Laser Engineering and Physical-Technical Technologies. And immediately the question arose: what should serve as the starting point—the establishment of the department as a graduating unit, the launch of the major, the inception of the field, or the creation of the basic laboratories from which it all began?

KPI graduate Vladyslav Boyko: "Engineering is my life's work!"

Vladyslav Boyko, owner and executive director of KyivMedService, a national leader in the maintenance and repair of medical equipment, machinery, and instruments, is a graduate of the Department of Laser Engineering and Physical and Technical Technologies at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. A successful engineer and manager, he does not break ties with his alma mater. “We know everything about medical technology, and even a little bit more,” says the entrepreneur, "and we want to share our knowledge and experience with current students.

Oleksandr Danyleiko. Challenging tasks stimulate to continuous development

In today's environment, the production of competitive mechanical engineering products requires technologies that ensure high quality products and improve their performance. In particular, combined thermomechanical hardening using laser radiation and surface treatment is an effective technological method of increasing the wear resistance of parts.

Oleksii Kahliak. There is work for... diamonds

How are ideas for developing a new technology and tool born? This question arises when you get acquainted with the materials of fundamental and applied research, which are carried out simultaneously with the educational process on the basis of two departments of the Educational and Research Institute of Materials Science and Welding named after E.O. Paton ( Institute of IMZ) of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute - the Department of Physical Materials Science and Heat Treatment (FMTO) and the Department of Laser Engineering and Physical and Technical Technologies (LTFT).
