In early June, the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive of the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automation at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute hosted the Second International Workshop on Computational Methods in Systems Engineering in person. The workshop focused on the use of various computational methods, models, and software tools for studying dynamic systems. It was organized to facilitate the exchange of ideas and research findings aimed at developing optimal solutions to complex engineering challenges in electrical engineering and related fields.
A total of 19 papers were submitted for the event. Following peer review, 16 presentations were selected and delivered by leading researchers from more than ten higher education institutions and research organizations in Ukraine, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
The workshop was opened by Vasyl Budko, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Automation. He emphasized the indispensable role of computer technology and specialized software in the development and operation of modern power engineering, electrical engineering, and electromechanical systems and devices.
The workshop continued in five parallel sections:
- Automated Analysis in Electrical Systems
- Computational Methods for Aerospace Systems Design
- Advanced System Design
- Artificial Intelligence for Economic Applications
- Data Analytics and Decision Making
The presentations covered a wide range of applications of computational methods, including classical and advanced approaches to the analysis and synthesis of electrical devices, as well as electromechanical and aerospace systems. The researchers explored these systems by solving relevant logical, algebraic, and differential equations and developing mathematical models based on them.
Other topics included the use of artificial intelligence for time-series analysis and decision-making, as well as the development, implementation, and application of information technologies and software for designing and operating specialized automated and intelligent control systems and for planning the motion of dynamic systems.
The workshop brought together researchers at different stages of their careers, from students taking their first, tentative steps in research and presenting their initial, sometimes still somewhat naive attempts to address problems that have captured their interest, to renowned scientists with significant achievements and advanced academic degrees, titles, and positions. The latter presented the results of many years of work, drawing on extensive experience and knowledge, as well as previous research conducted by the scientific teams and schools they lead. This combination of knowledge and youthful enthusiasm, together with the welcoming atmosphere extended to every participant, encourages research activity, helps establish professional contacts, and creates opportunities for further achievements.
Another distinctive feature of the workshop, reflecting current trends in science, was the presentation of research by several co-authored teams whose members represented different higher education institutions.
As always, the presentations by researchers from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute's Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Automation attracted considerable interest. They presented research findings on complex electrical and electromechanical systems for industrial applications. Presentations by researchers from Kyiv Aviation Institute focused on various approaches to motion trajectory planning.
All workshop participants emphasized its relevance, timeliness, and practical value, as well as the high standard of its organization and delivery. They expressed hope for continued communication and cooperation through this and similar events.
