Commemoration meeting devoted to 80th anniversary of outstanding thermophysical instrument engineering scientist, founder of Ukrainian heat measurement school Oleg Arkadiyovych Gerashchenko was held on September 27th in House of Scientists. It was arranged by the Institute of Physics of the NAS of Ukraine and State Polytechnic museum of NTUU “KPI”.
Oleg Arkadiyovych was born on August 12th 1925 in Toshkent Wiloyati. In 1939 his family moved to Kyiv. At first he studied at maritime academy and at river college. And in 1945 he entered the second course of Thermotechnical Faculty of KPI. He was getting high grades, taking an active part in university life: was the monitor of the group, carried out academic secretary, KPI SSTC editor and Oktyabr'skiy district committee of Komsomol non-tenured lecturer’s duties, worked in sci-tech coteries. In 1949 the young specialist O. Gerashchenko has got an assignment to Odesa shipbuilding and ship-repairing yard.
In 1951 Oleg Arkadiyovych turned back to Kyiv, worked as research associate, later as Heat Measurement Department chief in Technical Thermophysics Institute, 1972-1988 he is the head of the Institute. 1988-1992 he runs the Heat Measurement Department at Energy Saving Institute of NAS of Ukraine.
In 1955 he passed Ph.D. defense, and in 1969 – his doctoral thesis, since 1973 he is a professor, in 1976 he was voted into the chair of corresponding member of Academy of Science of Ukrainian SSR. His life was devoted to science. His works are very important and actual; more than 400 of them were published. He trained more than 30 PhDs and 5 Grand PhDs. Scientist’s researches still are the theoretical and practical basis for Thermophysical Instrument Engineering. The fundamental result of Gerashchenko’s activity is the foundation of Ukrainian Heat Measurement and Thermophysical Instrument Engineering School.
The scientist had a wide range of interests: he crafted, went for sports and liked literature. In 1969 he was given a title of Master of Sport of USSR (sailing). He always followed through the line.
Although he had long-sighted and great plans Oleg Arkadiyovych unfortunately he passed early. Long-lasting Chornobyl disaster aftermath containment in which he took part had grave consequences.
The anniversary commemoration meeting was opened by the Institute of Physics of NAS of Ukraine director, academician of NAS of Ukraine A.A. Dolinskiy.
Academician of NAS of Ukraine Y.P. Korcheviy, Doctor of Engineering Science V.G. Fedorov and professor of KNUFT shared their memories about the scientist and their colleague.
The head of scientific-research institute of metrology from Russia (Novorossiysk) V.Y. Cherepanov told in his letter about the O.A. Gerashchenko’s contribution to the development of heat measurement metrology. The memories of Doctor of Engineering B.I. Stadnyk about his meeting the scientist were read. About O.A. Gerashchenko’s participation in Chornobyl disaster aftermath containment told Doctor of Engineering S.S. Ogorodnyk from State Academy of Housing and Community Amenities.
Daughter of Oleg Arkadiyovych (great granddaughter of V.N. Karazin) L.O. Deshko expressed her gratitude to the organizers of the event. Oleg Arkadiyovych son’s speech about his father was full love and warmth. For him father always remains the man of Renaissance.
