The Department of Вioenergy, Bioinformatics and Environmental Biotechnology was established according to the order of the rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute No. 38/2020 dated December 31, 2020 on July 1, 2021. It was created on the basis of the Department of Environmental Biotechnology and Вioenergy and the Department of Bioinformatics, which graduated specialists capable of solving urgent issues in the fields of bioenergy, environmental protection biotechnologies and bioinformatics using modern methods of biotechnology and bioengineering for more than 17 years.

In today's reality, phenomena that disrupt the biospheric balance and affect flora and fauna life processes are rapidly developing. Environmental pollution, readily available energy sources materials and minerals reduction, new types of diseases and their causative agents’ increased tolerance to existing medicines challenges to  train specialists capable of solving problems and creating new technological solutions based on modern biotechnological approaches and bioengineering.

The Department of Вioenergy, Bioinformatics and Environmental Biotechnology trains highly qualified engineers able to solve the problems posed to humanity in various branches of industry and agriculture. The department graduates specialists in technologies:

  • energy carriers production (biohydrogen, biomethane, biodiesel, bio oil, etc.);

  • nanobiomaterials and bioplastics;

  • genetic engineering and new varieties of plants construction, etc.;

  • new medicines creation based on modeling of the biomolecular interactions;

  • waste of various origins disposal with the production of biologically active substances and other useful substances;

  • natural and wastewater treatment biotechnologies, etc.

At the Department of Вioenergy, Bioinformatics and Environmental Biotechnology, specialists are trained according to:

  • educational and professional programs of the first (Bachelor) level of higher education;

  • educational and professional programs of the second (Master) level of higher education;

  • educational and research programs of the second (Master) level of higher education;

  • educational and research programs of the third (Educational and Research/ Educational and Creative) level of higher education.

Educational programs for training of specialists have been developed taking into account the modern trends in the development of biotechnology and bioengineering as a scientific field, and the needs of the domestic and foreign labor markets. A high level of training in theoretical knowledge acquisition and practical field experience, a scientific worldview, and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice allow graduates of the the Department of Вioenergy, Bioinformatics and Environmental Biotechnology to be competitive and sought-after specialists.

  • eco-biotechnology: wastewater treatment, water reclamation;

  • bioenergy: hydrogen, biodiesel, bioplastics;

  • photo-bioelectrochemical waste and bio-raw materials conversion with the electrical energy and energy carriers production;

  • energy and energy carriers biotechnological production from waste of various origins;

  • biotechnology of wastewater of various origins treatment with simultaneous electricity production;

  • Bioinformatics: Mechanisms of intensification of heavy metal ions adsorption process modified by a magnetically controlled biosorbent for wastewater treatment;

  • metal surfaces microstructuring with electrodeposition and controlled corrosion in a magnetic field.
