In the context of the integration of Ukrainian higher education in the international educational space is an interesting reference to the history of our university, which was established in 1898 as an institution of higher education of a new type based on the experience of leading polytechnics Europe.

In 1912, the educational process at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute Alexander II was conducted on the academic subject system. The duration of training at one of the four department - the chemical - could fluctuate by personal choice and in accordance with the results of study of students in the range of 4 to 7 years.

Annual balance time student under the most intense academic work was planned as follows: from 52 weeks to 12 weeks allotted for the holidays, and 40 for the training. At a six-day working week and the 8-hour working day it comprised 1920 astronomical hours.

At the same time 720 hours were allocated for independent work primarily on the lecture material, and from 1200 remaining hours for the job training at the institute (lectures and practical work) only 975-1050 for planned work. That is, the student had a reserve time of approximately 9% the annual fund.

It should be note a significant increase in the proportion of practical work from 50% in the first year to 85.7% in the fourth year of study.

The volume of material that the student must learn also normalized. It was believed that one lecture’s hour corresponded to 5-7 text pages, each of which contained 2500 characters. With intensive study in an hour allowed for the study of lecture material (lectures and self-study), the average student must learn 2 pages.
