The Department of Theory, Practice and Translation of the English Language of the Faculty of Linguistics was established in 2000 on the basis of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​No. 1, where the scientific tradition and methodological basis for the training of specialists in professional translation were formed. From the moment the department was founded until 2010, its constant head and inspiration was candidate of philological sciences, associate professor Yuriy Ivanovich Vysochynskyii.

In different years, the department was headed by doctors of philological sciences, professors Alla Andriivna Kalita and Nina Hryhorivna Ishchenko. Since November 2020, the head of the department is doctor of philological sciences, professor Larisa Ivanivna Taranenko. Deputy Head of the Department - Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Zoya Mykhailivna Korneva.

Combining different generations of teachers - both young and experienced teachers who have worked at the university almost all their lives - the staff of the department includes 40 teachers, including 7 professors (6 doctors and 1 candidate of science), 10 associate professors (candidates of science), 4 senior teachers (candidates of sciences), 9 senior teachers and 10 teachers.

The TPPAM department is a graduation department that prepares bachelors and masters in the specialty "035 Philology" with the specialization 035.041 "Germanic languages ​​and literatures (including translation), the first is English" in full-time and part-time forms of education. Currently, 306 students study at the department, 166 of them on a contract basis; 102 students study at the correspondence department. In addition, since 2016, the department has been training applicants for the third level of higher education - the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Currently, 14 students are studying under the educational and scientific program 035 Philology.

In general, the department provides training of specialists in the field of philology, related to the implementation of all types of language mediation, professional intercultural interaction and translation of scientific and technical texts and business documentation. Special attention in terms of theoretical training of applicants is paid not only to fundamental philological and translation disciplines, but also to innovative trends in modern language science and its teaching methods.

At the first (bachelor's) level, students acquire educational qualifications for performing professional practical activities related to the implementation of all types of language mediation, professional intercultural interaction, analysis and translation of professional texts. The program is aimed at forming such competencies of higher education students that enable their comprehensive professional, intellectual, social and creative development, taking into account the realities and challenges of today.

At the second (master's) level, training is focused on the scientific and innovative component of training. Students not only study modern trends in philological science and improve practical skills of translation and foreign language communication, but also conduct their own scientific interdisciplinary research. Students of higher education have the opportunity to gain knowledge from other fields, learn a third foreign language and other educational components, forming an individual learning trajectory.

The third level of higher education ensures the training of highly qualified, competitive and integrated into the European and global scientific and educational space specialists with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, who are capable of independent scientific research, scientific innovation, organizational management, translation and teaching activities in the field of humanities by specialty 035 "Philology" in institutions of higher education.

Having a strong scientific staff, the department conducts interdisciplinary scientific research aimed at the study of various aspects of modern linguistics and translation studies (you can refer to "Science - scientific directions and schools": https://ktppam.kpi.ua/naukovi-napryami/). Annual international scientific and practical conferences and seminars and all-Ukrainian student conferences are held at the department, which involve scientists from Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia and other countries. Every year, the winners of the department become prize-winners of all-Ukrainian and international Olympiads and competitions.
The work of the department is also focused on the preparation of monographs, writing scientific articles for specialized publications of Ukraine, increasing the number of publications co-authored with foreign scientists and in publications indexed by the scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, expanding scientific cooperation with domestic and foreign educational and scientific institutions https://ktppam.kpi.ua/mizhnarodna-diyalnist-3/).
Applicants and teachers of the department take an active part in the ERASMUS+ mobility program in the field of education and scientific exchange. Scientific and pedagogical workers regularly undergo internships in foreign institutions and institutions of higher education (Great Britain, Spain, Poland, the Kingdom of Belgium, etc.) (https://ktppam.kpi.ua/uchast-u-mizhnarodnih-programah/). The department continues to work on expanding the ways of cooperation with universities - participants of the ERASMUS+ academic mobility program, as well as on the search for new partners from universities of European countries, in particular, continued cooperation with such foreign institutions of higher education as Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), Dumlupinar University (Republic of Turkey), University of Groningen (Netherlands) and an agreement on cooperation and exchange of students with the Faculty of Humanities of the Catholic University of Leuven (Kingdom of Belgium) has been concluded.

In addition, the teachers of the department actively cooperate with foreign representations in Ukraine: MASHAV (Israeli Center for International Cooperation MASHAV); National ERASMUS+ office in Ukraine (NEO in Ukraine); Ukrainian-Japanese Center of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" (UYC).

The teachers of the department also participate in the work of international and all-Ukrainian scientific organizations, such as TESOL Ukraine (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), BESIG (Business English Scientific Interest Group), Societas Linguistica Europaea, Ukrainian branch of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language ( Supported by British Council Ukraine), All-Ukrainian Scientific Society "Kyiv Phonetic School", All-Ukrainian Public Organization "Ukrainian Association of Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics" (UAKLiP), Center for Ukrainian-European Scientific Cooperation, etc.
