In July and August 2016 teachers of NTUU “KPI after Igor Sikorsky's” were trained in the courses as a part of the project “English language for universities”, which is implemented by the British Council in Ukraine. The purpose of this courses is professional development of teachers and to familiarize with modern approaches of English language teaching professional direction and special subjects in English language at universities of Ukraine. In General, this training was attended by 16 teachers from the NTUU “KPI after Igor Sikorsky”, including 5 teachers and 11 teachers of special subjects.
The courses for teachers of special subjects are held in groups, which was consisted of 14-15 people, and courses was invited trainers from the UK. During five days this teachers got a lot of information which is useful for anyone who wants to teach English of professional orientation. The main purpose of the courses was the training of lecturers in teaching English subjects, and every minute of the classes was dedicated to this.
Various issues was taken into: problems and barriers that may arise during the teaching English language to Ukrainian and foreign students, ways of communication with students and interactive sessions, preparation of presentation material, correct pronunciation, preparation for class, feedback to students, checking of students, understanding of the presented material, group assignments.
It is noting that the results obtained during training of knowledge can be used for the teaching of Ukrainian language which will significantly improve the quality of learning and level of students learning. The participants had the opportunity to practice teaching mini-lectures in English and to get helpful advice from coaches and colleagues from other universities. Teachers got a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate their mastery, and although at first some of them lectured in the traditional style, but from the second day of the training this lectures became more and more interesting and usefull properties, which once again confirmed the inestimable value of the experience which gained from the trainers of the British Council.
The training gave to teachers of the NTUU “KPI after Igor Sikorsky” a lot of positive impressions due to meeting many interesting people. The program was attended by representatives from different universities of Ukraine. During lessons teachers of technical and liberal arts were discussed the problems they faced on the way of Bologna process and collectively searched for solutions. And they had the opportunity to discuss the issues with the former, but still Minister of education and science, which turned out to be a very open person with modern views on what should be higher education in Ukraine.
Participation in this courses was increased the professional level of the teachers and was forced to think about changes in teaching methods. After the training teachers will not only realize in education activities all they have learned during training and to change it for the better, but also to disseminate the acquired knowledge among other teachers, conduct seminars and public lectures with students
