Each employee of the university creates its history, investing in the development of this great body energy, scientific and teaching achievements, as a cell that pulsates and gives life to the Kiev Polytechnic. In 2004 the arrival of Ph. D. S. V. Horobets to KPI was another contribution to the university. Because later she headed the Department of Bioinformatics which was the first in Ukraine.

The importance of bioinformatics has been recognized by scientists all over the world. Molecular biology and genetics at this stage couldn’t actively develop without bioinformatics. Creating of organisms with predetermined properties, cloning - these processes are impossible without their modeling, pre-processing of huge amounts of information from molecular biology.

Understanding the importance and urgency of this area, at the initiative of the rector, academician of NAS of Ukraine M. Z Zgurovsky, the Department of Bioinformatics was established in KPI in 2006. S. V. Horobets was invited to become the head of this department. Holding a degree in cybernetics, she initially worked at the department of biotechnology and engineering. After becoming the head of the department, she and her colleagues launched the formation of the educational direction of bioinformatics in NTUU "KPI". But it is a challenge because almost all major scientific achievements in this direction were obtained abroad, and in most cases the literature is English or Russian. So today the work on creating Ukrainian-language manuals and textbooks on bioinformatics is performed.

A pre-established in 2004, educational and scientific laboratory of physical and information technology in biology and medicine, whose supervisor is Svitlana Vasylivna, has become the basis for the department and research in computer science. Working on development of the department, Svitlana Vasylivna is successfully engaged in scientific activities. According to its results, she became the winner of the contest "Teacher-Scientist-2008". Research in the field of magnetic technology for biomedical applications is conducted at the department under auspices of Svitlana Vasylivna. The department cooperates in this area with the Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology n. a. R. E. Kavetsky, Institute of Magnetism of NAS and MES of Ukraine, the Institute of Surface Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine and others. The areas of research with the highest priority are the measurement of physical properties of nanoparticles which are magnetically controlled for targeted delivery of drug forms, including magnetic susceptibility, size, and nanostructure of the surface, distribution of magnetic phase and the development high-gradient ferromagnetic separation nozzles for these magnetically controlled carriers with desired physical properties. Among the achievements of the department are development of settings and methods for determining the magnetic susceptibility based on resonance and magnetophoretic effects, production of high-gradient ferromagnetic attachments, exploration of the surface of magnetically controlled carriers using atomic and magnetic force of scanning microscopy. Inventions of the department in these areas are defended by 24 patents of Ukraine, more than 100 articles in professional journals are published. The textbook stamped by MES of Ukraine "Fundamentals of biomedical application of high-gradient magnetic separation" which authors are S.V.Horobets, O.U.Horobets is printing. The circle of scientific interests of Svitlana Vasylivna also includes the following areas: magnetically controlled biosorption of heavy metal ions, processes of self-organization in interphase surfaces (e.g. biological objects-electrolyte or metal-electrolyte) in a magnetic field, development of constructions of magnetic separators for biomedical applications and others. Svitlana Vasylivna is the author of more than 200 publications, including 3 author’s certificates and over 40 patents. Nowadays youth is involved in scientific work the Department of Bioinformatics on a competitive basis because work at the department is prestigious.
