Recently Heat Power Engineering (TEF) celebrated the 80th of its anniversary is one of the largest and oldest faculties of the University. During all this time, there were scientific researches aimed at the improvement and development of thermal power and heat engineering equipment and technologies.

In 1905, O.O.Radtsih defended his doctoral thesis on a theme: "Mathematical theory of heat interchange in the cylinders of steam engines" in the mechanical department of KPI. It was the first scientific work of the practical application of thermodynamics in the study of operating processes of heat engines in Russia. In 1906, O.Ya.Stupin defended a doctoral thesis on a theme: "Devices for induced circulation of water in boilers ". A number of researches in areas of heat engineering were performed in other departments KPI, but scientific work was not carried out due to wars and revolutions in the KPI to almost 20 years of the twentieth century.

In 1922, research departments were established academic in the KPI, which had to train a scientific and instructional staff with the better qualification through a postgraduate course and they were also subject to "Ukrnautsi. In 1927 a scientific branch of thermo Office of Academic Management of the Supreme Council of UkSSR national economy was established under the leadership of professor T.T.Usenko (a head of the department) at the academic department of heat engineering. The purpose of the office was to improve the efficiency of thermal power and the thermal technological equipment and the equipment for thermal power plants (TPP) and industrial enterprises of  many industries, including a sugar industry. M.O.Kichyhin, M.A.Kondak, I.T.Shvets, V.I.Tolubinskyy and other famous scientists in the future defended their dissertations in this period working in the office.

Since Kiev Industrial Institute (KII) was established in 1934. Research Sector was formed there. The research work KII was aimed at upgrading research staff member departments’ professional skills and to provide concrete assistance to the industry. A new equipment arranged laboratories. In 1940 M.O.Kichyhin defended a dissertation and A.P.Ornatskyy – a candidate's dissertation.

The plans for further development of scientific work at the faculty were destroyed by The World War II. In the evacuation teachers and scientists of the faculty executed a large number of applied scientific and technical works.

Instantly, the academic work at the Faculty renewed after returning from evacuation, relationships began to be established with industry, research and design institutes. In 1945 I.T.Shvets organized research work on gas dynamics and rocket technology at the department head of steam engines, which formed the basis of his doctoral thesis, which was defended in 1947. Since then a new scientific area of research in the department was defined – a study of the combustion processes under the intense burning liquid and gaseous fuels and the development of high-efficient burners and combustion chambers and turbine jet engines.

In 1964 the established academic laboratory of gas turbine building was formed heading by  Associate Professor V.O.Hrystychem (in the future - Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the UkSSR). According to the Council of Ministers at the Faculty, which made a significant contribution to the development of gas turbines UkSSR, including the creation of gas turbine capacity of 25 MW and 50 and more.

The research boilers at boiling heat in steam boilers and other technical facilities were conducted by the department. On this subject V.I.Tolubinskyy presented his thesis in 1950. In 1951, he was approved in the scientific rank of professor and was elected as a corresponding member of the UkSSR. Research works carried out in this area by the end of 1960.

The second research area that develops up to this day, made the study of heat transfer from the gases to the surface of the tube bundles in the flue boilers and other facilities.

In 1951, the first in Ukraine specialized laboratory for the study of highly boiling heat transfer and management of mobile media in terms of cooling systems objects new technology was formed on the initiative of dean A.P.Ornatskoho in company with the ITE UkSSR Academy of Sciences at the Department of boilers. The head of the laboratory was appointed A.P.Ornatskyy. Research conducted systematically till the 1990s, and their results are widely used in the creation of cores of nuclear reactors, powerful radio electronic devices of microwave, special artillery systems, equipment continuous crystallization steel, missile technology.

Thermal power plants investigated processes of combustion and heat transfer in boiler furnaces, opportunities to increase unit capacity burners and improvement of automatic control and management of processes and equipment were researched at the department. Since 1958 these studies department allowed to train engineers specialized in automate processes for thermal power plants. After some time, the department was renamed to the Department of thermal power plants and automation of power plants (NPPs and TEU).

In 1945 Associate B.P.Taranov received a copyright certificate of the UkSSR, and later patents of USA, England, India, Egypt for an advanced cogeneration turbine. These highly economical turbines with capacity of 50 and 100 MW began their production by the turbine motor Ural plant since 1958. B.P.Taranov defended a thesis based on the scientific results of his invention.

In 1957 The Problem Laboratory of gas dynamics and heat transfer (PLTH) was created by order of the Soviet government at the department boilers which some unique settings was built. In particular, the installation of boiler PK-31 on supercritical steam parameters (pressure of 40 MPa, the temperature of 700o   WITH) was completed in 1963. In 1965, PLTH was renamed to the problem of the laboratory heat and steam generation (PLTHP). A research of "High-temperature thermal physics" continued in PLTHP till 1990s. According to their results the doctoral thesis A.P.Ornatskym (1969) and 11 master's theses were defended in 1975.

Since the second half of 1970, the series of important works on the study of hydrodynamics and heat transfer in energy active zones of nuclear reactors VVER series was made in PLTHP. The results of these studies were defended 6 candidate dissertations.

In the early 1970s, a new devices the heat - heat pipe (TT) with metalovoloknystoyu capillary structure (MVKS)were created at the initiative of Professor A.P.Ornatskoho led by Senior Scientist, Ph.D. M.H.Semeny in PLTHP, which are widely used in energy, cooling system maintenance equipment, electronic equipment, rotor electrical machines, thermal control systems, space research equipment devices. M.H.Semenoyu doctoral dissertation (1983) V.M.Baturkinym (2011) and nearly 20 master's theses were protected due to research notes.

The research on the causes of increased destruction of tube heating surfaces supercritical steam parameters of power units of 300 MW  had been started on the proposal of the Ministry of Energy of UkSSR in PLTHP since the mid 1960s, the most advanced at that time. According to the research developed recommendations to improve the reliability of steam and create a system operative diagnostics of technical condition, and later - one of the first in the Soviet Union system of monitoring of processes in steam boilers, which was introduced on a massive block of TPP Ukraine and Bulgaria in the second half of 1980. The results of this work, Yu.H.Dashkiyevym doctoral dissertation (1983) and 10 master's theses was protected.

Science teachers and researchers of the Department of Theoretical and industrial heat (TPT), focused on the problem of improving and developing high-efficiency heating equipment industry since 1960.

From 1960 to the second half of 1980, under the guidance of Associate Professor I.E.Veneraki carried out a research of thermal processes that accompany getting light metals (aluminum, magnesium and sodium) by electrolysis of melts. Using the obtained results permitted the improving of the quality of products significantly saving the electricity.  The doctoral dissertations of professors V.I.Deshkom (1993) and Ye.M.Panovym (1996) and 12 master's theses were presented according to research.

The research was conducted by the Department TPT leading by professor O.I.Butuzova (up to 1975), professor and senior O.M. Alabovskoho and V.I. Kravchuka in 1964-1990 , whose purpose was the development and introduction of new thermal insulation for channel-free heat, their designs and technologies of laying. In 1987, the UkSSR State Construction approved a resolution on the widespread adoption of these developments in the construction and heating networks, allowing to significantly reduce heat loss and 30-40% of the cost of building lines and networks.

The researches its aim was to develop a number of contact heat exchangers with burners, submerged in a liquid that is heated were performed under the direction O.M.Alabovskoho from 1966 to 1989. By these studies O.M.Alabovskyy presented his doctoral thesis and his staff - 10 master's theses in 1975.
