Code of Honour of the National Technical University of Ukraine «Kyiv Polytechnic Institute»



Code of Honour of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" was developed considering the experience and examples of the best universities in the world. The text of the Code was created on the basis of the proposals of the University community, the Student Authorities and Trade Union Committees, and was approved by the Conference of the staff of NTUU "KPI" in April 9, 2015

1. GENERAL PROVISIONS

1.1. Code of Honour of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" (hereinafter - the Code) sets out the general moral principles and rules of ethical behaviour of people who work and study at the university, which they must follow in their activities.

1.2. The university strives to create an environment that promotes studying and work, aiming to the truth, knowledge, innovation, intellectual development of the students and the staff, maintenance of a special university culture of relationships. Each member of the university community, following the rules of the Code, makes an invaluable contribution to the development of the whole university, strengthening its image and reputation.

13. The Code is a list of guidelines and values following which is obligatory for the representatives of the community of NTUU "KPI" in the territory of the university campus and outside of it.

1.4. The general moral principles which must be followed by the university community are:

1.4.1. The principle of legality. The community members of the university must strictly follow the legal provisions and encourage others to do the same.

1.4.2. The principle of mutual trust. The atmosphere of trust encourages free exchange of ideas and information in the university environment, facilitates collaboration and easy creating of new ideas, releases from the fear that the results of activity can be stolen, career can be disfigured, and reputation can be damaged.

1.4.3. The principle of honesty and decency. In their studying and teaching activities, in researches, in practical work, etc. the representatives of the university community must act honestly, be frank and in any case they must not bring forward false statements consciously.

1.4.4. The principle of justice. In mutual relations between the members of the university community it is important for them to have open-minded attitudes to each other, correct and objective evaluation of the results of educational, research and work activities.

1.4.5. The principle of competence and professionalism. The students and the staff of NTUU "KPI" must maintain the highest level of competence in their work and studying. The imperative is their constant improvement of the educational and scientific level as a form of the implementation of the principle of "from education for the whole life - to lifelong learning."

1.4.6. The principle of responsibility. The students and the university staff must take responsibility for the results of their activities, carry out their duties. To be responsible means to resist shameful actions, negative influence of other people and be an example for others.

1.4.7. The principle of partnership and mutual assistance. In order to improve the quality of education and research results the representatives of the university community must focus on subject or partner interaction.

1.4.8. The principle of mutual respect. Respect in the university environment must be mutual, must be shown both to others and themselves. It is necessary to respect and appreciate different and sometimes opposite thoughts and ideas.

1.4.9. The principle of transparency. To prevent the abuse of functions by elected or appointed representatives of the university community, all the procedures that relate educational, research, business and financial activities must be transparent and simple.

1.4.10. The principle of safety and well-being of the community of NTUU "KPI". The students and the university staff must take care of the safety and welfare of the community. Any activity of the students and the university staff must not endanger life, cause damage to health and property of anybody in general and the members of the university community in particular.

Following the provisions written above must be a matter of honour for all the members of the university community.

2. GUIDLINES FOR ETHICAL CONDUCT OF THE STUDENTS AND THE STAFF OF NTUU “KPI”

2.1 These are worthy of the students and the staff of NTUU “KPI”:

2.1.1. To keep within the legal requirements of Ukraine and the internal regulations of the university, not to commit offences and to promote their committing by other persons.

2.1.2. To follow moral standards and rules of ethical conduct.

2.1.3. To follow the principles and rules of academic integrity.

2.1.4. To be responsible for their duties, to perform the necessary education, research and work tasks on time and conscientiously.

2.1.5. To contribute to the preservation and increase of the honoured traditions of the university by their activities.

2.1.6. To celebrate and explore the past of the university, artistic achievements of its renowned scientists, lecturers, graduates who made their contribution to the national and world education, science and technology.

2.1.7. To promote the positive reputation of the university.

2.1.8. To promote the prevention and elimination of various kinds of offences during educational, scientific and innovation and other types of activities.

2.1.9. To respect the dignity and security of the person, regardless of gender, age, financial status, social status, race, religious and political beliefs.

2.1.10. To promote the establishment and development of partnerships between the lecturers and the students of the university.

2.1.11. To lead a healthy and active lifestyle, to follow the rules of personal hygiene, to be clean and neat.

2.1.12. To maintain the atmosphere of trust, responsibility and mutual support in the university community.

2.1.13. To help the students and the university staff who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

2.1.14. To keep the campus clean and tidy; to take care of the property and resources of the university, particularly in dormitories.

2.1.15. To enhance the prestige of the university with their own achievements in education, science, sports, art performances, etc.

2.1.16. To prevent the emergence of conflicts of their interests under which we should understand the contradiction between the personal interests of a member of the university community and his/her work or educational duties that can have influence on the objectivity or impartiality of decision-making.

1.2.17. To take care of the purity of his/her own language and the language of colleagues.

2.2. Unacceptable for the students and the staff of the university are:

2.2.1. The use, production and distribution of addictive substances, drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking in public places.

2.2.2. Violation of morality, especially disgraceful behaviour in public places and the use of foul language.

2.2.3. Dissemination of false and compromising information about other students, lecturers and staff.

2.2.4. Receiving or offering rewards for unfair obtaining any advantage in teaching, research or work (bribery).

2.2.5. Intentional interference in the work of other students, lecturers or staff.

2.2.6. The aggression against others, sexual harassment.

2.2.7. Participation in gambling.

2.2.8. Participation in any activity related to fraud, dishonesty; forgery and the use of forged documents concerning to education or official position at the university.

2.2.9. Misappropriation of the results of someone’s work during educational, scientific and work activities.

2.2.10. The use of business and family relationships in order to obtain unfair advantages in education, research and employment.

2.2.11. Causing damage to the property as well as the material and technical resources of the university.

2.2.12. The use of symbols of the university or the faculty in various activities, not related to the activities of the university without permission of the administration (dean’s office).

2.2.13. Breaking the rules of coexistence in the territory of the university campus that bothers others.

2.2.14. Making or encouraging any attempts to gain an advantage or influence the change of an academic mark with the help of unfair methods.

2.2.15. Excess of power in the educational, work or research activities.

2.2.16. Commission of actions, which prevent educational or research process.

3. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY OF NTUU “KPI”

Academic integrity - is compliance with certain moral and legal principles, rules of ethical conduct at the university by the students as well as the staff when carrying out educational and research activities.

Lecturers, researchers and students who show aspiration to academic integrity, become not only role models, but also raise standards of educational and scientific activities in general.

The violation of the rules of academic integrity does not only damage the university's reputation, but also reduces the value of educational and scientific degrees acquired at university.

Responsibility for compliance with the values ​​of academic integrity is also the personal responsibility of everyone and a common goal of the university community in general. Each member of the university academic community – a student, a lecturer, a researcher, a director – is responsible for compliance with the principles of academic integrity in education, teaching and research activities.

3.1. The representatives of the academic community NTUU "KPI" must:

3.1.1. Believe in their own intelligence and abilities.

3.1.2. Carry out educational and research tasks conscientiously and independently (except the cases which legally require group work).

3.1.3. Respect scientific and educational achievements of others.

3.1.4. Make references to the sources from which information is taken, no matter in what form it is published - in electronic form or paper.

3.1.5. If they encounter difficulties while performing educational or research tasks, they should ask their colleagues, lecturers and supervisors for authorized help.

3.1.6. Do original work for each discipline.

3.1.7. Use only reliable and authentic sources of information in scientific and educational activities.

3.1.8. Remind their colleagues about the prohibition of violation of the academic integrity.

3.2. These are unacceptable in educational and research activities for the students and the staff of NTUU "KPI":

3.2.1. Plagiarism - intentional or deliberate full or partial proclamation (publishing) of someone's work (text or ideas) under the name of a person who is not the author of this work and without required references.

3.2.2. Fraud, which is:

• falsification or fabrication of information, scientific results and further use of them in an academic work;

• forgery of signatures in official papers (academic record books, acts, reports, agreements, etc.);

• use of prohibited support materials and technical devices (cribs, micro earphones, cell phones, tablets, etc.) during control activities;

• references to the sources that were not used in a work;

• cheating (replication) during any kind of current or final control activities;

• passing control procedures of knowledge by front men;

• delivering or representation of works of the same contents by different people as results of educational or scientific activities.

3.2.3. Unauthorized cooperation, which is:

• assistance for committing an act of academic dishonesty - a deliberate or conscious help or attempt to help someone to commit an act of academic dishonesty;

• buying results of educational and scientific activities (reports, abstracts, tests, design works, undergraduate, graduate and master’s theses, essays, articles, monographs and textbooks, etc.) from other people or organizations and further use them as one’s own results.

3.2.4. Offering or receiving an unlawful reward during student evaluation, carrying out educational and research tasks.

3.2.5. The use of family ties and business contacts to obtain a positive or higher mark passing any final control of knowledge or privileges at work.

3.2.6. Including in the list of authors articles, monographs, textbooks, etc. of persons who did not participate in obtaining scientific results.

3.2.7. Other types of academic dishonesty. 

4. ETHICS AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY COMMISSION OF NTUU "KPI"

4.1. In order to monitor the compliance of moral and legal principles of this Code by the members of the university community the Ethics and Academic Integrity Commission is created (hereinafter - the Commission) in NTUU "KPI". The Commission has the right to receive and consider applications concerning violations of the Code of Honour and provide suggestions to the administration of the university (the administration of faculties and institutes) concerning imposing appropriate sanctions.

4.2. The Commission follows in its work the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education", other valid regulatory legal acts, the Statute of the university, this Code and the Ethics and Academic Integrity Commission Regulation approved by the Board of Studies of NTUU "KPI".

4.3. The composition of the Commission is approved by the Conference of the staff of the university for 1 year upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies of NTUU "KPI".

4.4. The member of the community who witnessed or believes that there was a violation of this Code must inform the Ethics and Academic Integrity Commission of NTUU "KPI" about it. It is unacceptable to lodge (support lodging) unsubstantiated complaints or complaints without a signature.

4.5. If a student or an employee is doubt or uncertainty that his acts or omission can violate the Code of Honour of NTUU "KPI", he/she can consult the Commission.

4.6. Any member of the university community may apply to the Commission in order to make proposals and amends to this Code.

5. FINAL PROVISIONS

5.1. The members of the university community are obliged to know the Code of Honour NTUU "KPI". Ignorance or misunderstanding of the rules of this Code is not a justification for unethical behaviour.

5.2. The compliance with the principles and norms of the Code of Honour of NTUU "KPI" is confirmed with a signature of a member of the university community. First-year students sign their compliance with the Code of Honour of NTUU "KPI" in a mandatory manner.

5.3. The violation of principles of this Code may involve imposing sanctions, sending down or dismissal from the university upon the recommendation of the Ethics and Academic Integrity Commission.

5.4. The Code of Honour of NTUU "KPI" is approved by the Conference of the university staff.

5.5. The amendments to the Code must be made upon the recommendation of the Board of Studies of NTUU "KPI", the Student Council of NTUU "KPI", the Staff Trade Union Committee of NTUU "KPI", the Student Trade Union Committee of NTUU "KPI" and the Science Student Association of NTUU "KPI", the Ethics and Academic Integrity Commission. The amendments to the Code of Honour are made only upon the decision of the Conference of the university staff.
