Departments of the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management

From the Faculty of Mining to the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management

IEE LogoIn 1946, a Faculty of Mining was opened at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute to rebuild the mining industry destroyed during the war. Academicians O.N. Shcherban, М.A. Starykov, V.B. Sologub, Corresponding Member of Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR P.S. Kucherov, professors M.M. Zhukov, Y.Y. Ivanchenko, A.G. Mykhailov, В.В. Tsarytsyn, V.I. Kravets, V.M. Vynoslavskiy, associate professors O.M. Kuznetsov, I.P. Phil, P.F. Rybchenko, О.О. Vopilkin, and others were at the origins of the faculty.

In 1963, the Faculty of Mining was transferred to the Faculty of Automation and Instrumentation of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and in 1967 - the Faculty of Mining Electromechanics and Automation was established. In 1972, students majoring in "Electricity supply of industrial enterprises, cities and agriculture" were transferred from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering to the Department of Electrification of Mining (Department of Electricity Supply).

The deans of the faculty - associate professors O.M. Kuznetsov, G.K. Rozkishny, V.V. Smirnov, professors V.I. Kravets, V.M. Vynoslavskiy, О.А. Pirskyi and the director of the institute A.V. Prakhovnyk, - who devoted much effort to the formation and development of the faculty, have always been its moving spirit.

A significant contribution to the formation of the faculty was made by prof. V.M. Vynoslavsky, who was its dean for 30 years. A war veteran, an invalid of the Great Patriotic War, an Honored Education Worker of Ukraine, a kind and sensitive person, he devoted himself to the faculty and its development.

Scientific school on power supply was created at the Department of Power Supply under direction of professor V.M. Vynoslavsky: problems of creation of means of voltage regulation (V.M. Vynoslavskiy, P.F. Rybchenko, S.N. Karpov), optimization of modes of power consumption (V.Y. Pashchuk, A.V. Prakhovnyk, I.S. Riabenko), power supply systems of mining enterprises (O.I. Solovey, V.Z. Shyshkov), arcless switching apparatuses (V.M. Mishchenko, V.M. Konontsov), power supply subsystems in MIC systems for large industrial groups (V.D. Leporsky, A.V. Prakhovnyk, V.F. Skryl). In the 70-80s a scientific field of the management of electricity consumption was created under direction of professor A.V. Prakhovnyk. In 2005 the State Prize was awarded to professor V.M. Vynoslavskiy (posthumously), associate professor L.I. Nesen and associate professor V.V. Prokopenko for the textbook "Transient processes in power supply systems”.

In 1989, the Department of Power Supply with its contingent of students and facilities was transferred to the Faculty of Power Engineering and Automation, and the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Mining. A scientific and engineering center for energy saving was established at the department, which was later transformed into the Institute of Automation and Energy Engineering "Energy".

Research in the field of systems of control and automation of machines and technological complexes (M.G. Popovych, G.M. Yanchuk, G.I. Danylchuk) developed at the Department of Automation of the Mining Industry. Automated electric drives with semiconductor converters were developed and implemented under the guidance of professor V.M. Chermalykh.

Scientific fields for creating effective technologies, schemes of mechanization of mining, studying the properties of rocks and creating a tool for their destruction formed at the Department of Technology and Mechanization of Mining under the guidance of Professors V.V. Tsarytsyn and O.A. Pyrsky.

In 1989, the Department of Mining Electromechanics (Head of the Department Professor S.P. Shevchuk) was renewed as well as the training of specialists in mining electromechanics, and in 1995 the training of specialists for city underground development and mining began in the specialty "Electromechanical equipment of power-consuming industries" with the appropriate renaming of the department.

Since 1991, the Department of Mining Technology and Mechanization has been training specialists in ecology and environmental protection, and mine and underground development. In 1993, the department of underground development was created and headed by professor V.G. Kravets for the training specialists in the specialties "Mining and underground development" and "Development of mineral deposits" and the department of engineering ecology. The department of engineering ecology trains specialists majoring in "Ecology of mining", "Ecology of energy engineering" and "Ecological technologies, equipment and monitoring of extraction of drinking water from underground deposits".

As one of the implementation measures of the "Comprehensive State Program on Energy Saving" in 1997, the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management was established at NTUU "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" on the basis of the Departments of Power Supply, Heat Engineering and Energy Saving and Research Institute "Energy". In 1998, the Faculty of Mining Engineering was added to IEE. The Institute prepared proposals for the opening of a brand-new specialty in Ukraine "Energy Management".

In 1997, with the help of the European Community, the Center for Training Energy Managers was established at IEE. The main directions of the Center's activity are training, advanced training and retraining specialists in energy saving, eco- and energy management on the basis of higher education.

In 2009, the Comprehensive University Program "Energy of Sustainable Development" was launched. The Educational and Research Center "Energy of Sustainable Development" was created within the framework of the program, which is a structural subdivision of the Department of Science and Innovation of NTUU "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute". The center was created to generalize global and national experience in the development of energy-efficient technologies, devices and systems with the aim of implementing them to increase the level of energy independence and environmental safety both all over an object or a group of objects, as well as all over the region, and the country.

Currently, the institute includes seven departments: Department of Automation of Electrical and Mechatronic Complexes, Department of Geo-engineering, engineering ecology, power supply, electromechanical equipment for power-consuming industries, heat engineering and energy conservation, labor protection, industrial and civil safety. More than 130 teachers work at IEE - professors, associate professors, senior teachers and assistants. More than 1,400 full-time and part-time students study at the institute. There is a comfortable dormitory for 900 people.

During its existence, the institute has trained more than 10,000 engineers and masters. Departments of the institute trained specialists for many countries: Albania, Algeria, Vietnam, Iraq, Cuba, Jordan, Zaire, Nepal, Niger, GDR, Syria, etc.

Graduates and lecturers of the institute have defended more than 30 doctoral theses and 270 candidate theses. More than 10,000 scientific works have been published by teachers and employees, including 150 textbooks, study guides and monographs.

Graduates of the institute work at enterprises and organizations in various sectors of the economy of Ukraine, the CIS countries, Asia, Europe and America. Among the graduates are well-known heads of enterprises, associations, ministries, departments, famous politicians and public figures.
