On the 17th of April in the 5th corps (TEF) took place a meeting of students with a man-hero, high quality professional in the field of nuclear energy, in the recent past Professor of NPP and ITF Serhiy Shirokov.

After graduating from Ural Polytechnic Institute, since 1961 to 1980 he worked at Beloyarsk NPP, where he rose from a young specialist to the chief engineer of the station. Since 1980 to 1988 worked as a head of the Atomic Energy Ministry of Energy of USSR, directed starting 1st and 2nd blocks of Rivne NPP and was directly involved in resolving technical issues on building blocks on Crimean, Odessa and Chyhyryn NPP.

Since 1991 Serhiy was elected to the vacant position of assistant professor of NPP and ITF, and then he became a professor of the department, where he worked until 2013. He is also the author of many books, textbooks and workshops, which are taught by our students. It should be mentioned that books on nuclear and neutron physics of his authorship were published in Ukraine for the first time. This made an opportunity to prepare a galaxy of highly skilled professionals in the energy industry.

His lectures are exciting and informative. The subject of the latest is "The Chernobyl catastrophe." This largest in history technological disaster shocked the whole world. According to Serhiy Shirokov, liquidator of the accident, on April 25 1986 the 4th power unit of Chornobyl NPP was planned to be stopped for the next service. It was decided to use this opportunity for a number of testing and experimentations. The purpose of one of them was checking the design routine which provided using the inertia of the turbine generator to power the main pump circulation in case of external power supply loss. After an accident, no one knew about state of power and radiation on the territory of Chernobyl NPP. Tragedy first was silent. During the explosion and fire just 30 people of station attendants died. The radiation was so high, that three weeks of using 4 thousand tons of sand, boron, lead and clay were needed to isolate the reactor and prevent further contamination of the soil and the environment. On the territory within a radius of 30 kilometers from the accident were evacuated more than 100,000 people.

This tragedy cannot be spoken about without emotions, especially, when you are talking to Serhiy Shirokov. I would like to express my deep gratitude for the interesting and informative lecture and wish good health. Looking forward to meeting you, Serhiy Shirokov, next year!
