The National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute",

The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the National Technical University of Ukraine, salutes the great achievement by NASA engineers and scientists who successfully flew Ingenuity, the first helicopter drone, in the thin atmosphere from the surface of Mars today. NASA’s achievement follows the path pioneered approximately 110 years ago by Igor Sikorsky who performed some of his early aviation developments for helicopter flight while a student in 1907 -1911 at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1919, Sikorski emigrated first to France and then to the United States to continue developing and developing aircraft. He flew the first practical helicopter in 1929 and the first commercial design was produced in 1939. We at KPI salute him for his early developments while he was studying at KPI. To honor Igor Sikorsky’s pioneering work and spirit in 2016 KPI was renamed in his honor as the ‘Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’ (KPI).

As Igor Sikorsky himself would have done, we take off our hat to the breakthrough work of NASA engineers and scientists! SIKORSKY Kyiv Polytechnic Institute SALUTES YOU!

The National Technical University of Ukraine ‘Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’

Today Sikorsky KPI is the largest technical university in Ukraine with over 25,000 students and faculty. In Sikorsky’s spirit we graduate 25% of all IT professionals, scientists and engineers in Ukraine. Our alumni continue his legacy and work in Ukraine, Europe, America and all over the world.

A large number of prominent people worked and studied at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute including Eugene O. Paton, the inventor of electric welding; M. I. Konovalov, a well-known chemist; I. P. Bardin, Ukraine's greatest metallurgist; A. M. Lyulka, designer of jet engines; space scientist Sergey Korolyov who pioneered the first Sputnik in 1957 and the first manned flight of Yuriy Gagarin in 1961;  Igor Sikorsky, creator of the helicopter and commercial aircraft; Isaal Sigal, the well-known scientist in the field of fuel combustion and protection of the atmosphere from industrial pollution; Boris Y. Bukreev, a prominent mathematician known for his work in complex functions, differential equations, and non-Euclidean geometry; Dmitri Mendeleev, President of the First Exam Board at KPI in chemistry faculty and creator of the well-known Periodic Table of Elements in Saint Petersburg; also Stephen Timoshenko, reputed to be the father of modern engineering mechanics; Vladimir Chelomei, prominent mechanical scientist and rocket engineer; Aleksandr Mikulin, mechanics scientist and rocket engineer, aircraft engine designer and chief designer in the Mikulin Design and Construction Burea and other.
