On December 14, 2022, the leading Ukrainian scientist in the field of high-temperature thermophysics and heat power engineering, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor of the Department of Applied Physics of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Physics and Technology of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Doctor of Technical Sciences Artem Artemovych Khalatov turned 80.

In 1967, Khalatov graduated from the Faculty of Aircraft Engines of the Kazan Aviation Institute and worked at the same institute until 1978. In 1970 he defended his PhD and in 1977 his doctoral dissertations, both in the field of thermal physics of high-temperature power plants. He obtained fundamental results in the field of thermal physics of vortex and swirling flows, which are widely used in aviation and rocketry.

In 1978, Artem Artemovich moved to Kyiv. He worked at the Kyiv Higher Military Aviation Engineering School, the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and the Institute of Technical Thermophysics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, first part-time, from 1983 as head of the Department of High Temperature Thermo-Gas Dynamics, and from 1986-1994 as deputy director for research. In 1981, he was approved for the academic rank of professor, in 1990 he was elected a corresponding member, and in 2012 he was elected an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The fundamental research of A.A. Khalatov during the Kyiv period covers a number of new areas of high-temperature thermal physics and heat power engineering, which are important for heat power engineering and gas turbine construction. The most significant scientific results, which correspond to the world level, were obtained in the field of thermo-gas dynamics of flows in the fields of centrifugal mass forces. They cover vortex and swirling flows in channels, nozzles and diffusers, surface-vortex systems, curvilinear flows and centrifugal instability, laminar-turbulent transition in vortex flows, rotating systems, and innovative vortex cooling systems. The obtained results became the basis for the creation of new and modern cooling systems for gas turbine blades and nozzle devices with vortex structures, supersonic micronozzles with controlled thrust, vortex and cyclone chambers for technological processes, and the latest energy technologies. A large number of works have been performed in the field of thermo-gas dynamics of pulverized-coal boilers for the thermal power industry of Ukraine and the Maysotsenko thermodynamic cycle for new generation heat pumps. Applied results obtained by A.A. Khalatov have been widely used in leading organizations of Ukraine, including SE RPE "Zorya" - "Mashproekt" (Mykolaiv), ZMKB "Ivchenko-Progress" (Zaporizhzhia), Design Bureau "Pivdenne" (Dnipro), as well as a number of leading heat and power companies of Ukraine.

Artem Khalatov is the author and co-author of 27 monographs, 750 scientific articles (more than 100 translated into English) and more than 120 patents of Ukraine. The most important contribution to science is the fundamental monograph "Heat Transfer and Hydrodynamics in Fields of Centrifugal Mass Forces" in 10 volumes, co-authored with his students.

A.A. Khalatov's scientific achievements have been recognized by the state. He is an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, winner of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, two scientific prizes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after Academician H.F. Proskura and Academician V.I. Tolubinsky, the first prize of the NATO Scientific Committee, etc. For his applied research in the field of technical thermal physics and heat and power engineering, he was awarded the gold medal of the Pidhornyi Engineering Academy of Ukraine.

Artem Artemovich made a significant contribution to the training of scientific personnel. Among his students are 37 candidates and 4 doctors of sciences, one of whom was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A.A. Khalatov organized and headed the Department of Physics of Energy Systems at the Institute of Physics and Technology for about 10 years. Under his leadership, ten conferences of young scientists were held. He was repeatedly invited to the United States, England, Germany, France, Belgium, Korea, China and other countries to give lectures and hold scientific seminars.  Mr. Khalatov is an Honorary Professor at the University of Cardiff (UK) and the University of Utah (USA).

We sincerely congratulate Artem Artemovich on his anniversary and wish him good health, fruitful work and further success in his scientific and pedagogical activities, realization of the boldest ideas and hopes, new significant successes and achievements, preservation of creative energy and great enthusiasm for further activities for the benefit of science.

May your life sparkle with daring plans and ideas, all your endeavors become successful, optimism is always by your side, and your hopes will certainly come true. Happy birthday, dear jubilee!
