On the 11th of November, 1918 the World War I ended with signing the armistice by Germany in Compiegne forest near Paris. It was a breaking point in the history of Poland. After 123 years of separations it became independent again.

The day before Joseph Pilsudski returned home to Warsaw. He was interned in July, 1917 by Germans. Joseph was a commandant of the First Brigade of the Polish Legions in Magdeburg. Joseph Pilsudski was an extremely popular politician, who was the living symbol of the struggle for the independence of Poland. Before the house in which he lived a crowd gathered and representatives of different parties began to meet in his apartment.

On the 11th of November Joseph Pilsudski received Polish military power from the regency council, which was formally considered as the highest body of state administration, and began consultations with political parties on the issue of a coalition government. On the 14th of November regency announced the dissolution and gave Pilsudski all the power in the state, setting the position of temporal head of state.

On the 11th of November after getting the independence all the streets of Polish cities were filled with euphoria. However, the 11th of November was declared the national holiday by law only in April 1937.

During the Nazi occupation the official celebration of the holiday, as well as other public Polish celebrations, was impossible.

In 1945 the new government declared a holiday of Polish revival the 22nd July, that is the date of signing of the Manifesto of the Polish Committee of National Liberation. The holiday of the 11th of November was restored by Sejm in 1989, during the existence of the People's Republic of Poland.

Nowadays the 11th of November is the main national holiday in Poland. This day is a day off in Poland. The solemnities take place in all Polish cities. It is clear that the main celebrations with senior government leaders are held in Warsaw on the Joseph Piłsudski square in front of the grave of the Unknown Soldier. The holiday is also celebrated in all the embassies of Poland, including Ukrainian one. The Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Poland in Ukraine Henryk Litwin invited the "KPI" staff, who are activists of the Ukrainian-Polish center, to take part in the holiday celebration in Kyiv.
