The Department of Machines and Apparatuses for Chemical and Oil-refining Industries was created in a stormy 1928 as part of the Chemical-Technological Faculty of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. It was called then the chair of chemical engineering. Its first head was the KPI graduate of 1914 Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Professor Vasil’ Vasiliev.

After a number of reorganizations and the formation of the Kyiv Industrial Institute (KII) in 1934, the department was transferred to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and in 1938 - to the newly established Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Foundry.

In 1933-1936, the department conducted 3 courses: “Processes and apparatuses of chemical technology”, “Control and measuring devices”, “Chemical resistance of materials”. In 1937, the department began to conduct the following courses: “General Chemical Technology”, “Compressors of Chemical Industry”, “Refrigerating and gas installations, equipment of factories of the main chemical industry, construction and calculations of chemical machines and apparatus”.

The first issue of engineers-mechanics of chemical engineering in the number of 16 people was in 1935, in 1936 - 24, in 1938 - 25, in 1940 - 98 people.

With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, a large part of the students and teachers went to the front. The Innite was evacuated to Tashkent and became a member of the Central Asian Industrial Institute, where the chair of chemical engineering continued to be headed by professor Vasyl’ Vasiliev.

In Tashkent, the department continued training engineers-mechanics of chemical engineering. At the same time, the collective of the scientists of the department provided assistance to the Tashsil’mash, Red Aksay and other enterprises, solved the problem of protection against corrosion of the equipment at the Girchik chemical plant, etc.

After returning to Kyiv, in October 1944 the Department of Machines and Apparatuses of Chemical Production restored the training of specialists.

From 1945 to 1972, the department was headed by a well-known scientist in the field of machines and apparatuses of chemical manufactures, a graduate of the KPI in 1922 - Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor Joseph Ilyich Chornobyl, author of more than 200 scientific works.

The department has formed a scientific direction - the study of heat exchange in industrial equipment and the creation of new machines and apparatuses of chemical production based on theoretical and experimental research, namely heat exchangers and evaporators, equipment for the processing of polymers, dryers and granulators, dust collectors and filters.

From 1948 to 1954 the MACI department was a part of the mechanical faculty (now - MMI), and since 1954, after joining the Kyiv technical of Silicates to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the department is part of the renovated Chemical Engineering Faculty. In the postwar period, the department was called MACP - machines and apparatuses of chemical production.

From 1973 to 1999, the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Yuriy Lukach. He was Honored Worker of NTUU “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, a specialist in the field of theory and practice of polymer processing and heat and mass transfer, a long-term head of the specialized scientific council “Processes and equipment of chemical technology”, author of more than 300 scientific works, including 7 monographs, 100 copyright certificates and 15 foreign patents.

On January 22, 1997, the Department of MACP was renamed to the Department of Machines and Apparatuses of Chemical and Refining Industries.

Since 1999 the department is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Yaroslav Kornienko, Honored Worker of National Education of Ukraine, Vice-Rector of the University (1996-2000), author of more than 450 scientific works, including 10 monographs and 3 textbooks, a well-known specialist in the branch of heat and mass exchange, the scientific leader of a large number of masters and dissertations.

Under his control, the department continues to train specialists of a wide range who can work in machine-building, chemical, food-processing enterprises, research and design organizations, in teaching, public and state work.

The department carries out preparation of specialists for the educational program “Equipment of chemical, oil refining and pulp and paper industry” specialty “Sector engineering” and two specializations: “Engineering, computer modeling and designing of chemical and oil refining industries” and “Engineering, computer simulation and design of pulp and paper production equipment”.

During the existence of the department more than 7000 specialists were trained, among them from 1998 up to now 274 masters have been prepared (during the last 5 years - 84 masters).

Graduates of the department are in great demand among employers. During the years of the establishment of the scientific school, the co-workers of the MACOP Department defended 20 doctoral and more than 60 candidate’s theses. Over the past 5 years, there have been 5 defenders of Ph.D. theses, namely: R.V. Sachok (2014), S.V. Gulienko (2016), O.A. Novokhat (2016), D.M. Shved (2017), S.S. Gaiday (2018).

Our graduates are fluent in DELPHI and JAVA programming languages and successfully use them for designing original equipment using computer systems MathCAD, MatLAB, SolidWorks, COMPASS, AVEVA PDMS, AutoCAD, etc., which allows them to successfully compete in job search, in startup projects and contests for study abroad grants.

After graduation, the graduates of the department successfully work: design manager at BOING, ROSHEN, FESTO, KOSTAL, Tetra Pak; technologists at Carlsberg Ukraine, Obolon PrAT, Pharmaceutical Plant Biopharm LLC, Ferroli; project managers, for example, in the Ukrnaftahimproekt, LLC "Institute of Gas", ELCO, at the NBU banknote paper factory; top managers of such enterprises as Lukoil Ukraine, OJSC Ukrplastik; Microsoft programmers, in engineering, chemical, food companies, research and design organizations, in teaching.

Graduate of the first years Morgailo was the director of the Kiev machine tool, Krynetsky - the head of the design bureau of the Slavic Soda Plant, Minyailo - the chief engineer of the Perm Chemical Plant. The teacher and graduate of the department A. Bondar from 1958 to 1967 worked as Deputy Minister of the USSR and the Minister of Education of the USSR. Later prof. A. Bondar was the organizer of a new department and a new specialty at the chemical-technological faculty - chemical cybernetics. Graduate of the department prof. G. A. Aksedrud, a well-known expert in the field of extraction, headed the Department of PACT at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute, Professor A. Gryshchenko worked as the Deputy Director of the Institute of Automation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Among graduates of the department are Academician B.I. Bondarenko, Director of the Institute of Gas of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician B.I. Bondarenko and academic secretary of the same institute B.K. Ilyenko, director of the Institute of Technical Thermophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Academician U. F. Snejhkin.
