For the second consecutive year the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, having successfully passed a competitive selection among higher education institution and scientific institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science for prepayment at the expense of the state budget of access to the international reference and scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, gives the opportunity to all researchers of the university to search the scientific information promptly, to choose publications on the necessary topic, partners for collaborative projects, consider research grant support, and more. With the purpose of effective use of the whole range of instruments of international databases in the educational process and research activities, seminars, trainings are held at the university, and are carried out on a regular basis, advising scientists, students and postgraduate students at the National Technical Library of Grigory Denysenko.

An important number, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the scientific potential of the university, is the publication activity of its scientists, in particular the publication of scientific results in publications indexed by the international databases Scopus and Web of Science, so it is significant enough that 2019 began with the emphasis on the need to build a publication scientist strategies as a key to successful research and new scientific advances.

22th January 2019 was a scientific-practical seminar "Scientist Publication Strategy: Clarivate Analytics Tools for Successful Scientific Activity" in the National Technical Library. The event brought together about 70 researchers from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, other higher education institutions of Kyiv and research institutes of The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The speaker Irina Tikhonkova, Candidate of Science in Biology, Clarivate Analytics Learning and Analytical expert, focused on the following key points: search for scientific information, including using Kopernio service, peer review, Publons capabilities, partner and grant search tools, constituents articles for publication in an international publication, search for publications by research topic, tools for evaluating publications, etc.

What is Web of Science?

International multidisciplinary scientometric platform Web of Science is "resources - different, literature - qualitative, indexing - complete, assessment - accurate", - said Irina Tikhonkova. The content of the platform consists of 15 databases, over 34,000 journals, over 150 million documents. The Web of Science Core Collection features more than 20,000 journals (more than 11,000 have an impact factor), more than 70 million documents (over 97,000 books, over 197,000 conference materials), and 35 million patent families.

What are the access conditions?

Access to Web of Science is carried out in the local network of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in anytime, from any computer. However, registered users have remote access. To do this, you need to register on the platform in the university network, using a corporate or personal email address. You can then work with Web of Science at home through your account. If you have any questions about working with Web of Science, you can always use the tips in the Web of Science Help menu to make the feature available in a search-relevant language.

Where is possible to find out more on your own at a convenient time?

For researchers to independently explore the possibilities of using the platform, a page on Facebook "Clarivate Analytics in Ukrainian" https://www.facebook.com/WoS.Ukraianin, and the corresponding YouTube channel "Clarivate Analytics in Ukrainian" is available.

Is it possible to publish for free in the journal included in Web of Science?

The speaker covered various business models of the journals: the traditional one, according to which the authors submit the manuscript, wait for the opinion of the reviewers and, subject to approval, receive free publication of the research results; open access, according to which the author, subject to positive reviews, pays for the publication of the article; a hybrid under which the author decides how the article will be distributed. Authoritative journals always care about the quality of the manuscript review process. If a scientist, when selecting a publication for publication of research results, stumbles upon a journal that does not involve a peer review process or asks for a ready review from another scientist, the author should be cautious, since such publication models are used by "predatory" inappropriate publishers.

How many authors can be published?

There are articles that list over 5500 authors. Therefore, authors can be as many as they make the effort and are responsible for the results that are published.

How many institutions can you assign to the author / authors of the article?

It is worth noting the names of all the institutions where the research work was carried out, the results of which are described in the article. "The uniqueness of the Web of Science Core Collection in full indexing of data - all journal documents, all co-authors of the publication, all organizations, all grants," - said the speaker.

We remind you that the source of the publication author / co-author's affiliation to the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute should be noted as follows: for Ukrainian language articles - National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", for English - Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Where can we find a list of Web of Science magazines?

You need to go to Web of Science and select Journal Citation Reports from the Tools menu, then click Browse by Journal, then you can select a category according to your area of expertise, and familiarize yourself with the list of journals.

We recall that according to citation, magazines fall into certain categories, quartiles: Q1 - 25% of magazines with the highest citation rates, Q2 - medium high position, Q3 - medium low position, Q4 - extreme position (journal or new and more does not have high scores, or has low citations).

The speaker also showed how and with which Web of Science tools you can find answers to the following questions: Who is exploring surface engineeringin China? Who is the leader in the amount of research done in the field of environmental safety? What journals have published studies on various aspects of cybernetic systems? Where can find a reviewer / research partner? How to access full texts with Kopernio? How many papers from Ukraine are there in Web of Science? What are the criteria for choosing a magazine?

We remind you that the scientific publication should have: published on the official site editorial policy, content of the publication, the international composition of the editorial board and authors, a unified name (in English, as well as an abbreviation), ISSN, DOI, reviewers, regular periodicity, a clear business model, indexation in reputable databases.

This is only a small part of the issues raised by the participants' interest and lively discussion both during and after the workshop. We remind you that consultations on the use of digital tools at different stages of the research cycle, the search for scientific information, the selection of publications by topic of research, evaluation of the publication for publication, updating the profile of the researcher in the databases Scopus and Web of Science, the design of citations and references in scientific works, respectively to the Ukrainian and international standards can always be obtained from the Center for Information Support of Education and Research of the Library (4th floor, 9th hall, (044) 204-96-72, science[at]library.kpi.ua).
