On August 30, there was held a solemn opening of the monument to the students and staff members of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
Mykhailo Zgurovsky, the rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Alexander Danchenko, People's Deputy of Ukraine; Anatoly Valiev, the author of the project; Stanislav Dovgy, President of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute; Dmytro Andrievsky, Head of the KPI Graduate Association and People's Deputy of Ukraine; Colonel Alexander Maniluk, graduate of KPI 2003, veteran of the War in Donbass, legendary cyborg – participant of battles for Donetsk airport and in other areas; Janusz Fuksa, the chairman of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Students' Section in Poland; members of the delegations of the three technical universities of the Republic of Poland and, representatives of the university leadership, students of t Institute of Specialized Communication and Information Security of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute participated in the opening ceremony. Veterans of the War in Donbass and Special Operations forces who work and study in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute were also present. Among them there were lecturers and cadets of Institute of Specialized Communication and Information Security, students and staff of other institutes and faculties.
The monument of red Ukrainian granite is located near the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the heavenly patron of the university, and a monument in honor of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. It is a stylized, elongated figure that resembles the figure of the goddess Nika, which traditionally represents military victories, and a Christian angel who exalts the souls of the dead soldiers to God. The names of all those killed during the Revolution of Dignity and in the battles for the Independence of Ukraine were engraved on the extended wings of the figure. The following words can be found on the pedestal "To students and staff members of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute who fell for Ukraine".
“Thirteen students and staff members gave their lives for the independence of our country. Those are active participants of the Revolution of Dignity and participants of the battles against Russian aggression in the east of the state,” said Mykhailo Zgurovsky, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine at the opening ceremony of the monument. “From March 2014, 31 employees were mobilized to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. More than three hundred graduates of the KPI of the past years have gone to the front of the volunteers. Currently, there are 35 students of our university who are also veterans of the war in Donbass.”
The sponsors of this project were the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine and Oleksandr Danchenko, people's deputy of Ukraine and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Informatization and Communications who graduated from our university in 1997. The authors of the monument are Anatoly Valiev, sculptor and Honored Artist of Ukraine, and Stanislav Snejhkin, architect.
