TEF researchers cooperate with the metallurgic giant

metallurgical giants “MMP Ilyich”

The Kiev Polytechnic has still preserved scientific schools that are capable of creating technologies that are competitive on the global market. Particularly, a school of combustion, the founders of which were Professors of the Heat and Power Engineering Faculty Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Khrystych and Gennadyi Mykolayovych Lyubchik. For more than 30 years already a group of scientists from the Igor Sikorsky KPI at the Heat and Power Engineering Faculty and the NGO “SNT” (on the basis of the cooperation agreement), together with the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, creates and develops a universal jet-niche technology for combustion of gaseous fuels under the direction of Associate Professor Myhailo Zagretdinovich Abdulin. Burners based on this technology have successfully proved themselves in various industries and agriculture in the modernization of furnaces, boilers, drying, combustion chambers, and others. At the same time, the outdated fire-technology equipment after the modernization of all indicators, including profitability, environmental safety and reliability of work, is consistent with world-class indicators.

Today, improving the quality of products and reducing its cost is one of the most important tasks set before domestic metallurgy. PJSC “Mariupol Metallurgic Plant named after Illyich” is a member of the Metinvest Group and is one of the leaders in the metallurgical industry of Ukraine with a full metallurgical cycle. The “Ilyich” MP is the largest in Europe, with a production capacity of 12 million tons of sinter per year. 12 agglomeration machines provide raw materials to the domain mills of metallurgical giants “MMP Ilyich” and Azovstal Iron and Steel Works. In 2015 -2017, all 12 furnaces of an agglomerate based on a jet-niche combustion technology were gradually upgraded at the enterprise.

Replacement of standard equipment of type GNP-6 on the burner device CHT-22 allowed achieving a high uniform distribution of temperature field along the width of the furnace, the complete combustion of natural gas in a short torch, reducing the removal of the product from the working zone of the sinter machine. The overall reduction of natural gas consumption at the expense of modernization was more than 30%. Replacement of burners allowed to ensure stably high-quality production of agglomerate, twice the output of low-grade fraction decreased. Such indicators did not remain unnoticed by the management of the company and the holding company Metinvest.

At the end of March 2018, at the initiative of the management of “MMP Ilyich”, a meeting was held between the developers and organizers of the implementation of the jet-niche technology at the enterprise with the director of the plant Taras Shevchenko and technical specialists of the enterprise.

Despite the enormous employment, the head of the enterprise paid considerable attention to the problematic issues of organization and technical cooperation. The meeting also discussed the results of the introduction of combustion technology and the prospects for further cooperation between the company and the scientists of the Kiev Polytechnic. The parties noted that such cooperation is beneficial to both the enterprise and the university.

Positive results of cooperation indicate the correctness of the concept of a research university, when universities and academia, enterprise and the implementing firm join forces. Of course, the functioning of such an unification is not an easy task and requires great effort. However, for the implementation of scientific developments, this, today, is probably the only way.

Students of our university, getting acquainted with the materials of the introduction of technology in production, get the experience of conducting research and implementation of the results of scientific and technical developments in the industry in the face of severe competition. Such knowledge is equally useful for graduates - future employees of industrial enterprises, and for future scientists and teachers of technical disciplines.
