The Educational and Scientific Institute of Telecommunication Systems (NN ITS) was established in 2002 on the basis of the Department of Telecommunications, which was organized in 1993, and the Scientific Research Institute of Telecommunications, which began its activities in 1990 and was then called the Research Institute of Radio-Electronic Engineering "TOR ". The initiator of the creation of both the department and the institute was academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences Mykhailo Yukhimovych Ilchenko, who headed these units.

In 1993, in accordance with the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the inclusion of communication systems in the priority scientific areas of Ukraine, the State Committee of Ukraine on Science and Technology created the state scientific and technical program "Communication Systems" and the corresponding scientific council. This state program was headed by prof. M. Yu. Ilchenko. He invited the leading specialists of Ukraine in the field of communication to join the Scientific Council and to participate in the work of the newly created Department of Telecommunications of KPI. Among them were professors S.G. Bunin, V.P. Vinnytskyi, A.V. Dorovskikh, K.S. Sunduchkov, L.P. Shcherbina, O.M. Lebedev and others.

Telecommunication Systems and Networks" (TKSM). In 2002, the second specialty began to be provided by the newly created Department of Telecommunication Systems and Networks, which was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Prof. Globa L.S. In the same year, the training of specialists in the third ITS specialty "Communication Information Networks" was started. Since the Research Institute of Radio-Electronic Engineering "TOR" has been conducting research mainly on telecommunications problems since the 90s, in 2000 its name was brought into line with the content. It was renamed the Research Institute of Telecommunications. According to the Resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2001, the scientific and methodical management of this institute was entrusted to the Department of Informatics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

According to the order of the rector of the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI named after Ihor Sikorskyi" No. 1-170 of December 27, 2004, the Educational and Scientific Institute of Telecommunication Systems (NN ITS) on the basis of the Department of Telecommunications was two departments were created: the Department of Information and Telecommunication Networks (ITM) with the specialty "Information Communication Networks" under the leadership of Dr. Globy L.S. and the Department of Telecommunication Systems (TC) with the specialty "Telecommunication Systems and Networks" under the leadership of Doctor of Technical Sciences Bunina S.G.

The results of the work of the TC department provided the basis for obtaining a license and an accreditation certificate (Series ND-IV No. 112361 dated 30.06.2005) of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for the right to study and issue diplomas to graduate students, which testified to the high level of organization of student education and their level of knowledge. Since 2010, the TS department has been headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences. Uryvsky L.O. From 2004 to 2021, 5 Candidates of Technical Sciences, 2 Doctors of Technical Sciences, and one PhD were trained at the Department of Technical Sciences.

In 2021, there were organizational, staffing and personnel changes in NN ITS, and from July 1, 2021, the departments of ITM and TS were reformed into a single department of Information and Communication Technologies and Systems (ICTs) as part of NN ITS.

From 2021 to July 1, 2023, the ICTS department provided training of specialists under two educational programs: "Information and communication technologies" and a new, modern, innovative, in-demand educational and professional program of the second (master's) level of higher education "Electronic communications and Internet systems of things" with the specialty 172 "Electronic communications and radio engineering", which was developed by the team of the former TS department.

In order to improve the organizational structure of NN ITS and in accordance with the decision of the Scientific Council of KPI named after Igor Sikorsky dated March 13, 2023 (Protocol No. 3) by order of the rector No. NU/45/2023 dated March 30, 2023 "On the educational and scientific institute of telecommunication systems of KPI named after Igor Sikorsky" (2023_HY-45.pdf) dated July 1, 2023 department ICTS of NN ITS was reorganized by dividing into the Department of Information Technologies in Telecommunications (ITT) of NN ITS and the Department of Electronic Communications and the Internet of Things (EKIR) of NN ITS and from 01.07.2023 the organizational structure of NN ITS was approved (2023_HY-45a1.pdf), provisions on department of ITT NN ITS (2023_HY-45a2.pdf) and regulations on the department of EKIR NN ITS (2023_HY-45a3.pdf).
Therefore, the existing Department of Electronic Communications and the Internet of Things (Email: ekir , phone: (044) 204-98-10, address: Kyiv, Industrial Lane, building 2) provides training of specialists under the educational program "Systems of electronic communications and the Internet of things" - certificate of accreditation of the specialty ND 1192655, valid until July 1, 2026.

The goal of the educational and professional program "Electronic Communications Systems and the Internet of Things" is to train specialists in the field of electronics, automation, and electronic communications who are able to solve specialized tasks and problems of electronic communications systems and the Internet of Things and to carry out research, innovation, and scientific-pedagogical activity in the conditions of sustainable innovative scientific and technical development of society, as well as in the conditions of transformation of the labor market through interaction with employers and other stakeholders.

At the end of 2021 (protocol No. 10 of December 13, 2021, approved by the Scientific Council of Igor Sikorskyi KPI) and at the beginning of 2023 (protocol No. 1 of January 23, 2023, approved by the Scientific Council of Igor Sikorskyi KPI), taking into account the latest trends in the field of electronics, the opinions of students, suggestions and comments of stakeholders, there was an update of the OPP, namely the provision of professional competences that are related to innovations in the development of science, production and the labor market.

During the existence of this OPP, the first attestation of higher education applicants under the educational program "Systems of electronic communications and the Internet of Things" has not yet taken place.
