Specialty 143 Nuclear Power Engineering

Educational program "Nuclear Power Plants"

Study in the educational program is focused on the most important and promising area of the energy industry – nuclear power. Students receive thorough physical and mathematical, computer and engineering training, knowledge of foreign languages, and the ability to work with modern software codes on a full-time basis.

They are trained to operate nuclear power plants, model neutron-physical and thermal-hydraulic processes in NPP equipment, solve problems of reliability and safety of nuclear power facilities. Students study modern software products and programming languages: AutoCAD, Inventor, MathCad, ANSYS-Fluent, SolidWorks and Python, C++.

Practical training is carried out at NAEK Energoatom enterprises as well as on the unique multifunctional simulator transferred to the department by the US Department of Energy

Multifunctional reactor simulator VVER type reactor unit

Students of the specialty can also study and undergo an internship in the leading organizations of the US energy industry within the framework of the cooperation agreement with Argonne National Laboratory, students receive an additional scholarship under the specified international program.

After graduation students are employed by nuclear power enterprises and organizations of Ukraine and the leading energy companies of the world: NAEK "Energoatom", the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, IAEA, VANO, etc. Graduates of the specialty have an exclusive right to obtain a license to operate a nuclear facility.

Educational program "Physical protection and accounting and control of nuclear materials"

Education in the educational program is carried out within the specialty 143 Nuclear Power Engineering on a full-time and part-time form of training in the master's degree program.

Training is provided by instructors who have completed internships at Texas A&M University, Sandia National Laboratories USA, and IAEA training courses. Practical training will be conducted at the J. Kuzmich Training Center for Physical Protection, Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials of the Institute of Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and at modern laboratories staffed and transferred to the IAEA Department.

During the training period the future specialists will acquire knowledge and practical skills in the basics of nuclear security; international and national legislation on the use, accounting and control and physical protection of nuclear materials; radioactive waste management, etc.

Specialty

142 Power Engineering

Educational program "Engineering and computer technology of thermal power systems".

Future engineers study heat and steam generation processes, basics of design and operation of energy equipment, modern efficient ecologically clean technologies of fuel use, computer methods of process analysis and design. Particular attention is paid to the study of new computer programs and programming languages: AutoCAD, Inventor, Mathcad, SolidWorks, ANSYS-Fluent, 3D Max.

Steam boiler for biomass combustion

Graduates of the department are prepared to perform work in the design, operation, manufacturing, installation, debugging and repair of power equipment. The fundamental knowledge and practical skills obtained will allow graduates to work with nuclear power plants, power, industrial and domestic boilers, industrial furnaces, steam and gas turbines.

To deepen their knowledge and practical skills, students undergo practical training at thermal and nuclear power plants, power engineering enterprises and scientific institutions, where they get acquainted with advanced engineering developments and scientific achievements.

Graduates work in engineering and managerial positions in energy companies, thermal power plants and nuclear power plants, design and research organizations, well-known manufacturers of energy equipment: Vaillant, Viessmann, Buderus, etc. Activities of specialists are related to the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, natural gas substitution, etc.

Scientific activity of the department

The department has a well-developed research part, where with the participation of teachers, researchers and students perform a large amount of research and development work in the field of nuclear, thermal and renewable energy, as well as energy-saving technologies.

Research of convective heat exchange was newly developed in the department: new ways of heat exchange intensification and highly efficient types of heat exchange surfaces were developed. Projects connected with creation of heat exchangers on the basis of flat-oval finned tubes and technological lines for their production are carried out together with E.A. Paton Institute of Electrophysical Equipment of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and were awarded with the Prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for the best innovative development.

Together with Huawei company scientific and research works on development of effective heat dissipation systems for electronic equipment are carried out.

Particular successes have been achieved in creating systems for space technology. Thus, with the participation of scientists of the department was developed a set of heat pipes for the heat removal from the electronic components of the asteroid lander module MASCOT and created a series of nanosatellites "PolyITAN", two of which were launched into earth orbit and worked successfully in open space.

Specialists of the department participate in the IAEA project on the development of nuclear reactors of the 4th generation with supercritical coolant parameters.
