Research work of students of the Department of Metal Physics IFB Mariana Verezhak on "New approaches to the crystallographic characteristics of aperiodic structures based on scattering of synchrotron and neutron radiation" received the award for the NAS of Ukraine university students as the best scientific work.

Investigation was performed at the Department of Physics of Metals of NTUU "KPI" and at the University of Rennes 1, France. It was to determine the structure and phase transitions and lattice dynamics of collective determination of aperiodic composite crystal n-nonadecane/urea. Experimental work performed at the European Center for Synchrotron Radiation (ESRF) and at a nuclear reactor (ILL), which confirms the high level of the tasks and their compliance with international standards.

The peculiarity of the research is its comprehensive nature. For the experimental studies innovative methods are used. The first time by direct measurement fase component of  atomic oscillations in aperiodic composite crystal and sound velocity anisotropy obtained using inelastic x-ray scattering.. The original software for the approximation of the resolution was created.

Results and experimental approaches proposed practical interest in creating surfaces with a unique set of properties; for hydrogen storage in hydrogen industry as well as a new generation of electronic and magnetic technology. The results are used in the classroom when teaching "Interdisciplinary problem of physical material," also planned to introduce new chapters in other courses.

Mariana, a straight “A” student,  participated in the research work of the Department of Physics of Metals of the first course. She repeatedly won in national and international competitions and received grants for research. She has a 6-month research internships in international centers - synchrotron and neutron, Grenoble, France; month internship at the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan and 6-month internship at the University of Debrecen in Hungary. These studies were performed under the state budget themes under the research program of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and under the joint project of fundamental research "FRSF Ukraine - NTSND France." The work was the way in 2013 published in the journal with the highest impact factor - Elsevier, Acta Materialia. This broad range of research interests, and experience and deep theoretical knowledge M.Verezhak caused the possibility of successful testing of the results at many international conferences.

Today she is a  graduate student of the Department of Metal Physics  and continues to research involving unique experimental equipment at the University Joseph Fourier according to a grant from the Nanosciences Foundation. On  April, 15 she read an online lecture on "aperiodic materials. Revolution in Crystallography"  to students of IFB at the international conference of students and graduate students each year conducted by the Department of Metal Physics.
