Pisarzhevskyy Lev Volodymyrovych (1874-1938) is an eminent scientist in the field of physical chemistry, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, laureate of the Lenin Award, head of KPI's Department in 1908-1912. In 1912 he left University in protest against the reactionary policy of the Minister of Education L.A. Kasso.

Since 1927 L. Pisarzhevskyy worked as the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Physical Chemistry (Since 1934 - Institute of Physical Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the USSR). Simultaneously (1929-1934) he was the Professor at the Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute.

L.V. Pisarzhevskyy created the basis of the electron theory of oxidation-reduction reactions, proposed the theory of galvanic cell, which explains the origin of electrode potentials, and established electronic theory of catalysis. For the first time, in the textbook "An Introduction to Chemistry" (1926), all his material was presented from the standpoint of the theory of electronic structure of atoms and molecules.
