Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and Poznan University of Technology agreed to start work on the creation of a joint nanosatellite

2018.03.01 КПІ ім. Ігоря Сікорського та Познанський університет технологій домовилися розпочати роботу над створенням спільного наносупутника

On the March the 1st representatives of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and Poznan University of Technology (Poland) signed a Protocol on Intentions for the Establishment and Launch of a Joint Nanosatellite.

The document was signed by the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Mykhailo Ilchenko and the head of the laboratory of nanosatellite technologies of the Heat and Power Faculty Boris Rassamakin on behalf of Igor Sikorsky KPI and by the  Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications Professor Krzysztof Vesolowski and Professor Andrzej Kasinski on behalf of the Poznan University of Technology (PUT),.

The signing ceremony was also attended by PUT professor Rafal Krenz and PUT coordinator for the development of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation Olga Vakhrin, by the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Director of the Mechanical Engineering Institute, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Nikolay Bobir, Dean of the Heat and Power Faculty Yevgeny Pismenny, deputy prorector for scientific work Igor Litvinov, head of international projects department of the Department of International Cooperation Sergey Shukaiev and others.

Recall that the Poznan Polytechnic (another PUT name) is a reliable partner of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. The agreement on cooperation between the two universities within the framework of the EU program "Erasmus +" is currently in force, and they are also linked by the double diploma agreements for the master's degree in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering. Therefore, the new project is a logical continuation of the course for strengthening of the interesting and useful for both universities relations in the field of education and science.

Prior to the signing of the Protocol, consultations and working meetings were held to discuss the concept and technical and organizational details of the development and preparation for the launch of a joint nanosatellite. In addition, members of the PUT delegation visited the Laboratory of Nanosatellite Technologies at the Faculty of Heat and Power, the Institute of Telecommunication Systems, got acquainted with the work and capabilities of the laboratories of the Mechanical Engineering Institute, visited the Boeing Training Center, the Training Center of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute - NAAS and the Ukrainian-German educational-methodical center "KPI-FESTO", working on the basis of MMI, etc.

According to the signed Protocol, the joint task of the partner universities is to develop, design and manufacture an electronic platform for a joint nanosatellite for remote sensing of the Earth.

The project participants agreed to combine the possibilities for creating a payload, processing and using the data derived from this load — a computer observation system (visible, infrared ranges) and a transmission system with definite characteristics.

Within the framework of the project implementation it is planned to establish an exchange of students, graduate students, graduate students and staff; to ensure the participation of students, masters, postgraduates in the design and development of specific nodes of spacecraft, in providing their thermal regimes, as well as in the testing of spacecraft and their systems; to establish cooperation in the exploitation of ground infrastructure (data acquisition and processing complex) of existing ground stations of Igor Sikorsky KPI, as well as the creation of a ground station on the basis of the PUT; coordination of the work of ground stations receiving data from satellites, etc.

The volumes and forms of financing of the stages and elements of the project will be determined by separate agreements.
