Innovative sensor smoke for fire safety system (project won at the Festival of innovative projects «Sikorsky Challenge 2016»)

It is known that the fire alarm system (SPS) belongs to the higher category according to the criterion of responsibility for security as the object on which it is installed, and the people in it. The particular relevance of the quality of SPS is in aviation, where not made to fly, if SPS is faulty, and terminate it in case of receiving a signal from the SPS (true or false) about the fire, that is, to interrupt the planned flight. World statistics shows that almost 60% of the signals «fire» that formed the PCA in flight, are erroneous, despite the fact that the reliability meets the requirements and standards. The analysis of such false positives to ATP systems revealed that their cause is the same influence on the optical sensors of these systems from dust and smoke, that is, the dispersion of light equally occurs on the dust particles and smoke particles.

Experts  of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv polytechnic institute and the Institute of semiconductor physics n.a. V. Ie. Lashkarev of NAS of Ukraine approached this question with a fundamentally new physical phenomenon is attenuated total reflection of laser radiation from the special nanostructures.

The project team (project Manager, Ph. D. Volodymyr Petrovych Maslov, Ph. D. Vitalii Yosypovych Kotovskyi, doctor of technical Sciences Volodymyr Andriiovych Poriev, chief designer of the project Yurii Valentynovych Ushenin, K. f.-medical Sciences Vasyl Oleksandrovych Morozhenko and young scientists Hlib Viacheslavovych Dorozhynskyi, Nataliia Volodymyrivna Kachur, and graduate student Hanna Vasylivna Kushnir) investigated the possibility of using this phenomenon and found that dust and smoke can be detected separately. This scientific and technical solution team has a patent of Ukraine for useful model, which simultaneously recorded signal of the optical scattering channel, channel on the phenomenon of frustrated total internal reflection from a special surface of nano-systems and of the temperature sensor. The signals from these channels can be analyzed programmatically and give the pilot information with no false positives.

The project provides, and should:

  • complete research on optimization design;
  • develop documentation for a prototype;
  • fabricate and test prototypes.

With the full completion of the project will be developed a range of sensors for aviation and other important from the point of view of fire safety of objects (nuclear power plants, military depots, munitions, manufacture of gunpowder, large logistics centers, etc.) and established their mass production.

The results of the project are relevant both for Ukraine and for foreign firms.
